About Our DistrictThe Madison Metropolitan School District is the second largest school district in Wisconsin. The district serves a beautifully diverse population of more than 25,000 students. Purpose of Position: The Head Cross Country Coach will oversee the entire Program and instruct the varsity high school cross country team. The Head Coach is responsible for helping each student-athlete gain success by reaching their full potential in the classroom and on the running surface.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise the cross country program coaching staff including all Assistant/JV/Freshman coaches.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Oversee training of cross country athletes in all events in conjunction with other coaches.
- Develop training plans for cross country athletes, in conjunction with other coaches.
- Assist in overseeing the running of specific events as needed at home meets and invitationals as directed by the Athletic Director.
- Contribute to event line-up planning with other coaches.
- Attend and coach all practices.
- Attend and coach all meets/events.
- Assist other coaches in monitoring team members' practice attendance, school attendance, meet/event attendance, and grades.
- Assist other coaches in enforcing team policies.
- Responsible for providing student-athletes feedback about their performance related to their disposition, behavior, and team skills.
- Manage program budget and organize fundraising efforts for the cross country teams
- Coordinate competition and practice schedules with the Athletic Director.
- Coordinate off-season training and conditioning programs for the cross country teams
- Successful completion of the required WIAA Rules Exam for cross country by the 2025 fall sports season.

Qualifications: - Demonstrated knowledge of running/cross country skills, particularly in skill development and strategies.
- If no teaching license, successful completion of an approved coach's education course (ASEP) or the ability to complete the course prior to the second season of coaching
- Current certification or must obtain within one month of employment and maintain CPR with AED certification from a national certifying agency.
- Ability to initiate and maintain open communication with staff, student athletes, and parents.
- Competitive experience in cross country at the high school level.
- Previous coaching experience in cross country at the high school level particularly girls.
- Ability to work cooperatively with other coaches in the program.
- Knowledge of WIAA eligibility standards and willingness to reinforce good sportsmanship and compliance with the District Athletic Code for members of the West country team.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and supervise a team with respect to schedules, equipment, student eligibility, officials, and safety.
- Demonstrated ability to work positively with a diverse population of student athletes.
- Ability to integrate the cross country program into the student- athlete's total school experience.
- Preferred: Valid teaching license
- Preferred: College playing/coaching experience
- Preferred: Demonstrated ability to successfully implement cross country systems in a high school setting
Length of Work: WIAA 2025 Fall Sports Season
Working Conditions: Hours of employment: Monday - Friday, 4:00 - 5:30 pm and Saturday 8:00 am; hours as assigned Will be also be expected to work in various outdoor weather conditions.
Physical Requirements:
The job will require you to stand for extended periods of time, while coaching at practices and games.
