JOB DESCRIPTION
CHARGE NURSE
PURPOSE:
Facilitates expert multidisciplinary care for the residents by direction, supervision and example
Acts as a clinical and managerial resource for all nursing units
Manages the unit on a shift by shift basis taking the responsibility of all aspects of care in conjunction with other nursing personnel
Cooperates with all other departments that impact the functioning of the unit
Provides leadership in conjunction with nursing assistants, including participation in standard setting and maintenance of care standards
Provides intermittent care and may be required to cover vacant positions when necessary
Participates in education and development of all nursing staff
JOB DUTIES:
Knows and implements facility policies and procedures
Assures staff are aware of and follows facility policies and procedures
Actively encourages the assimilation of new information and research within the nursing team
Assists in the training and orientation of new staff members
Maintains confidentiality at all times in all matters pertaining to resident and staff issues
Actively recruits and selects appropriate staff
Offers regular feedback, guidance and support to staff in accordance with unit policy
Calls in Certified Nursing Assistants to ensure adequate staffing
Clinical:
Coordinates and manages the delivery of care within the unit
Ensures the prompt initiation of appropriate treatments per physician's orders
Assists with and facilitates information gathering for accurate resident record entries
Leads the implementation of procedures as provided by the standards of care
Coordinates the transfer of residents per policy
Maintains and develops effective communication systems within the unit and across shifts
Assists with standard setting, protocols and quality assurance programs
Participates in the process of clinical and record audits
Management:
Manages resources effectively and economically
Monitors and evaluates the standards of care and facilitates remedial action when necessary
Assures resident care is delivered in accordance with established policies and protocols
Assures the safe custody and administration of drugs in accordance with established procedures and laws
Maintains effective communication with other departments
Attends relevant departmental and corporate meetings as requested
Provides internal shift coverage in the event of unplanned absence
Assures 24-hour Charge Nurse Coverage is planned, arranged and implemented
Education and Development:
Must hold a current KY license for RN or LPN and have long term care experience
Actively facilitates a progressive learning environment for all staff
Participates in current programs, campaigns and classes
Conducts and participates in competency testing
Conducts or participates in performance reviews
Maintains personal and professional development in accordance with state guidelines
Knows and implements safe practices
Participates in all required safety drills, monitors participation of all unit staff
