An Aqua Fitness Instructor is responsible for leading group exercise classes in a pool, instructing participants on various water-based exercises while prioritizing safety, ensuring proper form, and modifying routines to suit diverse fitness levels, all while promoting the benefits of aquatic fitness to pool users
Key responsibilities:- Class Planning and Instruction:
- Design and deliver engaging aqua fitness classes, incorporating a variety of exercises like water jogging, leg lifts, arm movements, and core work.
- Adapt exercises to different fitness levels and abilities, providing modifications when needed.
- Clearly demonstrate exercises and explain proper technique.
- Manage class flow and transitions between exercises smoothly.
- Prepares appropriate equipment, music, and handouts for each class.
- Knowledge of water aerobics teaching strategies and the incorporation of music, tempo, cueing technique, and rhythm.
- Choreography and music skills.
- Monitor participants closely during class to ensure safety and address any concerns.
- Enforce pool rules and safety guidelines.
- Be aware of potential hazards in the pool environment and respond accordingly.
- Provide proper instructions on entering and exiting the pool, especially for individuals with limitations.
- Greet participants and provide personalized attention.
- Assess individual needs and limitations to tailor exercises accordingly.
- Encourage participation and maintain a positive class atmosphere.
- Respond to questions and address concerns from participants.
- Promote aqua fitness classes to potential participants.
- Share information about class schedules, benefits, and registration procedures.
- Collaborate with facility staff to market aqua fitness programs.
Required qualifications:- Certification: A recognized Aquatic Fitness Instructor certification.
- Swimming Ability: Strong swimming skills and comfort in deep water.
- Fitness Knowledge: Understanding of basic exercise principles, anatomy, and physiology.
- Communication Skills: Ability to clearly communicate instructions and provide feedback to participants.
- Customer Service Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills to create a positive and welcoming class environment.
Work Environment:- Primarily in a swimming pool at a fitness center, community center, or aquatic facility.
- May involve working with diverse populations of varying fitness levels.
- May require flexible scheduling to accommodate different class times.
Sample EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Teaches scheduled classes, beginning and ending on time; provides adequate warm-up, exercise, stretching, and cool down. Instructs patrons on effective workout methods; explains proper techniques, demonstrates exercises; identifies different muscle groups, and teaches appropriate methods to strengthen specific muscles.
Manage Fitness Program:
- Coordinate weekly fitness classes
- Work with outside company for securing instructors
- Teach regularly scheduled fitness classes in addition to filling in for absent instructors as necessary
- Safety of participants (with use of equipment & maintaining a safe gym space)
- Work with outside vendor for equipment maintenance and repair
- Create personal fitness programs for our residents based on their individual health histories and fitness goals
Responsible for:
- Fitness class equipment cleaning and ordering
- Locker registrations
- Resident complaint resolution
- Risk management issues
- Online signups - create, maintain online signups for fitness classes and pool usage
- Collect data and track residential use of the pools and land class participation, both for evaluating our programs and for contact tracing for COVID
Organize, manage, conduct these ongoing events:
- Wellness Fair
- Healthy Eating Expo
- Fitness Expo
- Wellness Seminars
- Fitness & Wellness specialty classes
- Write fitness & wellness articles for month publication
- Annual Fitness Expo
- Seminars - secure and schedule local Doctors, therapists, health and wellness professionals to educate our residents on a wide variety of health and wellness topics.
- Create and present wellness classes to enhance the quality of life of our residents.
- Specialty exercise/wellness interactive classes - invite experts/teachers from a wide variety of backgrounds to conduct classes. (i.e. Meditation, Healing Circles, Nutrition and Life Coaches, kid's week, POUND, Your Mind Can Make You Well.)
Supervisory Responsibility This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

The job operates indoors and outdoors within a residential community. The work site will have moderate noise level.
- Must be able to traverse wellness facility and inspect all equipment.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at a time.

Education and Experience:- High School Diploma.
- At least three years of related experience required.
