Position Summary

The Vice President of Marketing Operations is a senior executive responsible for shaping and leading the company's global marketing strategy, brand presence, customer experience, and market intelligence capabilities. This role spans oversight of strategic marketing, brand development, digital engagement, and customer insights across all markets and geographies.

The position is critical to the integration of customer and market knowledge into corporate strategy, product development, and commercial execution. It ensures that Illumina's positioning, programs, and touchpoints reflect a unified and forward-looking vision that drives growth, innovation, and impact across the genomics and life sciences ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Marketing & Brand Leadership

  • Define and execute the global marketing strategy, ensuring alignment with corporate goals, scientific innovation, and customer needs.
  • Own the brand narrative and visual identity across all platforms, ensuring consistent application across product, digital, and corporate communications.
  • Partner with executive and cross-functional leaders to prioritize marketing investments that drive measurable business impact.
Market Intelligence & Customer Insights
  • Lead global efforts to monitor, analyze, and synthesize trends across genomics, multi-omics, clinical diagnostics, translational research, biopharma, and emerging market segments.
  • Develop and operationalize a comprehensive market research and segmentation strategy that informs growth strategies, innovation, and go-to-market planning.
  • Provide customer and competitor insights to guide product positioning, resource allocation, and regional strategy.
  • Continuously assess segment-level business forecasts, including market size, growth potential, and competitive dynamics.
Competitive Intelligence
  • Build and manage a scalable competitive intelligence function that tracks competitors' offerings, pricing, marketing strategies, and positioning.
  • Deliver regular updates and strategic recommendations to senior leadership to inform differentiation, pricing strategy, and investment prioritization.
  • Maintain benchmarking tools to support go-to-market and commercial planning.
Customer Experience & Engagement
  • Define and lead the customer experience strategy across all touchpoints to enhance satisfaction, retention, and long-term value.
  • Oversee the development and analysis of customer feedback systems, surveys, and engagement metrics to inform improvements across the business.
  • Champion a customer-centric culture, ensuring the voice of the customer is Embedded in strategy, operations, and innovation.
  • Manage executive-level engagement programs such as the Customer Briefing Center and Global events, aligning with strategic business priorities and product milestones.
Digital Marketing & Demand Generation
  • Oversee global digital marketing, including CRM, SEO/SEM, automation, analytics, content strategy, and E-commerce channels.
  • Ensure digital tools and platforms are effectively driving lead generation, conversion, and customer acquisition.
  • Leverage data and performance metrics to continuously optimize marketing operations and campaign effectiveness.
Creative Services & Content
  • Direct development of high-quality creative content and collateral to support brand storytelling, product marketing, and thought leadership efforts.
  • Ensure content is aligned with brand standards, scientific accuracy, and regulatory compliance.
Team Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Build and lead a high-performing, multidisciplinary marketing team across brand, market insights, digital marketing, and customer experience.
  • Collaborate with Sales, Product Management, R&D, Regulatory, and Commercial teams to drive alignment and support successful product and commercial launches.
  • Develop executive-level presentations to communicate marketing performance, market insights, and strategic priorities to leadership and the Board.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business, Life Sciences, or a related field; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
  • 15+ years of progressive marketing leadership experience, ideally within genomics, biotech, or life sciences industries.
  • Demonstrated success in market intelligence, brand leadership, digital strategy, and customer experience.
  • Proven track record of building and leading global marketing teams and delivering measurable business growth.
  • Strong analytical, strategic, and presentation skills; ability to influence senior executives and collaborate cross-functionally.
  • Deep understanding of customer segmentation, scientific markets, genomics and healthcare innovation.
  • Experience with CRM, marketing automation, market research tools, and digital analytics platform.

The estimated base salary range for the VP, Marketing Operations role based in the United States of America is: $273,400 - $410,000. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual's qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
