Job Summary The Visitor Experience Café Associate carries out the daily on-site operations of the International African American Museum (IAAM) café. They prepare and serve specialty coffee, other beverages, and limited food items to visitors, provided excellent customer service and product. They are also responsible for consistently maintaining a clean and presentable Café.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Greets customers as they approach the service counter.
- Distributes menus and presents the daily specials.
- Takes food and beverage orders and delivers them, including food, beverages, condiments, and other requested items to customers.
- Prepares and serves hot and cold beverages, including specialty coffee, blended coffee, and tea, to patrons; correctly customizes orders as requested and ensures orders are prepared to customer's satisfaction.
- Describes product details to customers and answers questions regarding the menu.
- Serves prepared foods and baked goods including desserts, parfaits, Banana Pudding, or other southern based sweets, depending on weekly menu.
- Receives and processes customer payments via credit card, cash, etc. in the POS.
- Ensures customer service stations are properly stocked with paper products or beverage preparation items.
- Cleans and sanitizes all equipment, utensils, dishes, work areas, service and dining areas.
- Ensures proper functioning of freezers, refrigerators, and heating by routinely checking temperatures in that equipment.
- Stocks supplies of food and beverage products; may inventory, order, or receive products as directed.
- Monitor stock levels regularly to ensure inventory is maintained at optimal levels; notifies relevant team or department when stock is low and needs to be reordered.
- Collects plates, beverage containers and clears the tables as customers finish their meals.
- Provides support to other departments as needed.
- Adheres to company policies and procedures, standards and practices, regulatory compliance, and company directives including dress code and attendance.
Experience and Qualifications: - Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to follow all safe food handling procedures and sanitation practices
- Ability to manage multiple orders simultaneously and recall faces, names, and preferences of frequent patrons
- Must be able to operate POS system and handle credit card and cash transactions efficiently. Previous experience preferred.
- Ability to serve customers quickly, efficiently, and kindly.
- Barista or food service experience preferred
- Customer service experience preferred
- Experience operating point-of-sale systems preferred
- Must be able to work effectively with the general public, IAAM staff and volunteers and consistently provide excellent and courteous customer service in person, email, phone
- Strong listening, verbal, mathematical and written communication skills are essential
- Must be dependable and have reliable transportation
- Adheres to company policies and procedures, standards and practices, regulatory compliance, and company directives including dress code and attendance.
- ServSafe certification a plus.
Physical Requirements:- The ability to work extended hours during a mentally and physically demanding events schedule while remaining flexible, calm, positive, and professional.
- Ability to deal with and resolve problems while remaining flexible.
- Must be service-oriented and adaptable to change
- Ability to be present and move about public areas and/or to perform laborious functions for extended periods; ability to recognize notifications from life safety and other alerting and alarm systems; ability to transport and relocate items up to 25 pounds.
- Must be able to endure standing for long periods
