We seek a passionate and dynamic instructor committed to excellence in teaching, performance, and scholarly activities. The successful candidate will be an integral part of our vibrant music community, contributing to both the academic and artistic development of our students. The successful candidate will demonstrate potential for significant contributions to the field through research and creative activity. Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to developing a studio of undergraduates, including a multicultural population of first-generation students within the context of a Historically Black, (HBCU), Land Grant, Liberal Arts University.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Teaching and Student DevelopmentProvide high-quality instruction to undergraduate and graduate students across a variety of styles and genres.Teach low brass instrumental classes (trombone, euphonium, tuba) to music majors and non-music majors.Advise and mentor students in their academic, artistic, and professional development, including guiding them through recitals, juries, competitions, and auditions.Direct low brass ensembles and participate in other music performance groups as needed.Recruit and retain excellent studentsTeach other classes as needed within the department.Performance and Creative ActivityMaintain an active performance schedule, both as a soloist and in collaboration with other artists, ensembles, and organizations.Engage in scholarly and creative activities that contribute to the advancement of the field and the reputation of the department.Encourage and facilitate student participation in recitals, ensembles, and other performance opportunities within the university and the community.Curriculum Development and AssessmentParticipate in the development and revision of the low brass curriculum, ensuring high academic and performance standards.Contribute to the assessment and evaluation of student performance and progress, providing constructive feedback and support for continuous improvement.Assist in the design and implementation of departmental initiatives that enhance the learning environment and educational outcomes.Service and Community EngagementServe on departmental, school, and university committees, contributing to the governance and development of the academic community.Participate in outreach activities, including recruitment, auditions, and community engagement events that promote the department and its programs.Collaborate with colleagues to support interdisciplinary projects and initiatives that advance the mission of the KSU College of Arts and Sciences. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Expertise in Low Brass Instruments: Mastery of trombone, euphonium, and tuba performance and pedagogy.Instructional Ability: Proven ability to teach individual and group low brass lessons at all skill levels.Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication abilities, with the capacity to engage effectively with students, colleagues, and the broader academic community.Curriculum Development: Ability to design and implement music curriculum focused on low brass education and performance.Performance Skills: Demonstrated professional performance experience in solo, chamber, and/or ensemble settings.Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and external stakeholders.Technology Proficiency: Familiarity with music software, online learning platforms, and digital tools for teaching and performing.Recruitment and Retention: Capacity to attract and retain talented music students through engaging instruction and mentoring. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:Supervise and mentor student performers, low brass ensembles, and teaching assistants as applicable.Oversee the work of student instructors or graduate assistants in the low brass area. WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:The position typically requires work in a classroom and rehearsal setting, with occasional travel for performances, conferences, or recruitment events.Some evening and weekend hours will be required for performances, student recitals, and special university events.May be required to lift and transport musical equipment (instruments, stands, etc.). OTHER DUTIES: Participate in university and department-sponsored events such as concerts, workshops, and conferences.Perform other related duties as assigned by the Department Chair or Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities. QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Doctorate in Music (D.M.A. or Ph.D.) with a concentration in Low Brass preferred. Master s degree in Music with significant professional experience in low brass performance and teaching will be considered.Experience: Previous experience teaching at the college level is highly preferred. Demonstrated success in low brass performance, including solo and ensemble work, is essential.Certification/License: None required, but membership in relevant professional organizations (e.g., International Trombone Association, International Tuba and Euphonium Association) is encouraged. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Demonstrated success in recruiting and teaching at the college levelDemonstrated excellence in teaching at the college or university level, with a record of successful student outcomes.A proven track record of solo and collaborative performance experience across a range of musical styles and genres.Evidence of ongoing scholarly or creative activities, such as performances, recordings, publications, or conference presentations.Demonstrated interest in a broad representation of instrumental literature through performance, effective communication skills, a record of performance activity in professional music venues and organizations, and demonstration of ancillary benefits to the department in cross-curricular interests, community engagement, or other skills
