Public Storage is looking for a VP of Tax to lead our corporate tax department and drive strategic tax initiatives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the tax department, overseeing all tax planning, compliance, and reporting activities.
- Develop and implement tax strategies to optimize the company's tax position and support business objectives.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and international tax laws and regulations.
- Provide strategic tax advice to senior management and other departments.
- Drive process improvements and efficiencies within the tax function.
- Mentor and develop the tax team, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.
- Lead and oversee compliance with all REIT regulations and requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's in Business Taxation (MBT) or Master's in Accountancy with an emphasis in tax preferred.
- Minimum of five years of experience at a Big 4 accounting firm, with a preference for experience in real estate taxation.
- 10+ years of total tax experience in public accounting and private industry, with a preference for experience with publicly traded entities.
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to mentor and guide a team of tax professionals.
- Strong communication skills, capable of presenting complex tax concepts to various stakeholders, including senior management.
- Demonstrated ability to drive change and implement new processes to improve efficiency and accuracy in tax reporting and compliance.
- Experience in streamlining tax processes to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.
- Ability to identify and implement best practices for tax compliance and reporting.
- Skilled in utilizing technology to optimize tax processes and improve data accuracy.
- Strategic thinker with a focus on continuous improvement and innovation in tax operations.
REQUIRED EXPERTISE
- In-depth knowledge of Subchapter M of the Internal Revenue Code pertaining to real estate investment trusts.
- Expertise in Subchapter K of the Internal Revenue Code relating to partnership formation, operation, and termination.
- Proficiency in Subchapter C of the Internal Revenue Code regarding corporate formation, operation, and termination, including merger and acquisition provisions.
- Comprehensive understanding of tax principles related to real estate operations, such as asset capitalization rules, repair and maintenance rules, depreciation principles, income and expense recognition rules, like-kind exchange rules, and involuntary conversion rules.
- Expertise in ASC 740, Income Taxes.
WORKING KNOWLEDGE
- State and local taxation, as the company operates in 41 states.
- International tax principles for outbound investment, as the company has affiliates in eight European countries.
- Real property transfer tax rules.
- Consolidation regulations.
- IRS practice and procedure principles.
- Energy tax credit principles and rules.
- Subchapter L as it pertains to property and casualty insurance operations.
