Books-A-Million, Inc., the premier book retailing chain in the Southeastern United States and the second largest book retailer in the nation, seeks to hire an experienced attorney to serve as the Vice President, General Counsel for the corporation.


The Vice President, General Counsel will report to the executive leadership team and be directly responsible for the management of legal processes - including personnel, real estate, and business - within the company.


Responsibilities


  • Participate in the definition and development of corporate policies, procedures and programs and provide continuing counsel and guidance on the legal and implications of all matters.
  • Oversee all legal aspects of the company's real estate portfolio, including lease negotiations, renewals, acquisitions, and compliance matters.
  • Serves as the key lawyer/legal advisor on all major business transactions and negotiates critical contracts.
  • Judges the merits of court cases filed against or on behalf of the company, works with the appropriate executive(s) to define a strategic defense and approves settlements of disputes when warranted.
  • Oversee and manage the legal function of the corporation comprised of two direct and all outside counsel relationships.
  • Actively manage third-party relationships, including setting and monitoring engagements, budgets and billings, evaluating existing relationships, making new legal/professional provide recommendations, and actively managing cost controls and service efficiencies.
  • Provides oversight to the company's insurance and risk management programs

Qualifications


  • A Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA - accredited law school, and state bar membership in good standing.
  • Experience on either the lessor/developer or lessee side of real estate transactions.
  • Experience working in employment law, intellectual property law, or corporate governance is a plus.
  • An individual who will thrive in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment and is comfortable being part of a business undergoing change.
  • An individual who is approachable, trustworthy and dependable, with exceptional interpersonal and team development/team-oriented skills.
  • The position can be in Birmingham, AL; Charleston, SC; or remote.
  • Ability to travel up to 25%
