The Vice President, Scouting America Controller (VP Controller) is a pivotal leadership role within our organization that focuses on financial oversight and strategic financial management. This position requires a seasoned professional who brings extensive experience in financial reporting, compliance, budgeting, and accounting practices specifically tailored for the nonprofit sector. The VP Controller will play a critical role in ensuring the financial integrity of the organization, overseeing the financial performance, and aligning financial processes with our mission-driven goals. In this capacity, the VP Controller will drive the development and implementation of effective financial strategies and ensure that our financial practices comply with applicable standards and regulations. This individual will collaborate closely and serve as a strategic partner with the CFO, executive leadership, board members, and other stakeholders to provide financial insights that inform decision-making and safeguarding the corporation's tax-exempt status and financial sustainability.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and enforces financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure accurate financial reporting to the Executive Board, management, regulators, and the public.
  • Provides controllership leadership to Scouting America's local councils.
  • Stays current with FASB pronouncements, IRS regulations, Sarbanes-Oxley Act requirements, and other financial compliance standards.
  • Monitors regulatory changes and facilitate necessary governance adjustments.
  • Leads and coordinates annual independent audits of the organization, its affiliates, and various employee benefit plans.
  • Serves as the primary liaison with external auditors, reviewing audit scopes, addressing findings, and implementing recommendations.
  • Supports the implementation of an enterprise-wide risk management framework.
  • Collaborates with the CFO and Audit Committee on internal audit planning and resolution of findings.
  • Oversees the timely and accurate preparation of financial statements, ensuring compliance with GAAP, IFRS, and nonprofit accounting principles.
  • Manages the organization's financial close processes, including reconciliations, reporting, and variance analysis.
  • Provides financial information to charity watchdog groups to maintain transparency and trust.
  • Ensures proper management of tax, insurance, and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Oversees compliance with all restricted grant funding from Federal, State, Foundation, and Corporate sources.
  • Develops and implements grant tracking systems to ensure funds are used according to donor specifications.
  • Supports the preparation of grant budgets and financial reports for funders with accuracy and transparency.
  • Ensures proper management of endowments and restricted funds within the foundation, adhering to donor intentions and legal requirements.
  • Collaborates with program managers to align financial oversight with strategic initiatives.
  • Leads a team of financial professionals, establishing clear responsibilities, hiring, training, and performance management.
  • Fosters a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement in financial operations.
  • Manages a geographically dispersed team, ensuring consistency in accounting practices and financial reporting.
  • Partners with the CFO and SVP of Financial Planning & Analysis to develop the annual budget and present it to the Executive Management Committee and the board of directors.
  • Monitors short- and long-term financial resource adequacy.
  • Provides insights into financial trends, risks, and opportunities to support strategic decision-making.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Competencies

  • Knowledge of: Nonprofit financial management, including restricted grants, endowments, and donor reporting; complex accounting transactions, financial instruments, and compliance requirements; GAAP, IFRS, and nonprofit accounting standards; internal control frameworks, audit procedures, and risk management strategies.
  • Skill in: Financial policy development and implementation; data analysis to identify trends, risks, and opportunities; presenting complex financial information to diverse stakeholders; team leadership and talent development.
