The Vice President of Ethics provides leadership for Clinical Ethics throughout CHRISTUS Health. This role ensures that clinical ethics across the system is consistent with the moral theological positions of the Catholic Church, philosophical bioethics, the CHRISTUS Mission, Core Values, and the appropriate accrediting and regulatory health care agencies. The Vice President of Ethics, in collaboration with ministry Directors of Ethics, Vice Presidents of Mission Integration, and system leaders ensures effective clinical ethics structures and processes to identify, address, document and evaluate all program elements. This position effects a consistent actualization of Clinical Ethics across the healing ministry.
Major Responsibilities:
- Oversees Clinical Ethics structures and processes in all system ministries to ensure success in meeting the needs of clinical staffs, patients and families.
- Develop and recommend system-wide ethical guidelines and policies concerning clinical, organizational and social issues by working with appropriate departments of CHRISTUS in identifying the issues and developing the appropriate responses.
- Track emerging issues in clinical and organizational ethics as these issues impact CHRISTUS Health and provide information and guidance on these issues to management, patient care, medical staffs, etc.
- Promote an understanding of and adherence to the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services.
- Ensure education on and implementation of approved system-wide ethical guidelines and policies.
- Collaborate with the Director of Integrity for the development of and education on the CHRISTUS Code of Ethics.
- Interface with other key departments in CHRISTUS Health concerning the ethical dimensions of their work.
- Develop guidelines for and education on ethical discernment and decision-making processes in CHRISTUS Health.
- Collaborates with the system Environmental Stewardship team to ensure responsibility for the social justice perspective of Catholic theology in the care of creation.
- Maintain an inventory of ethical policies throughout CHRISTUS Health.
- Provides leadership and direction to the ministry Directors of Ethics in order to ensure continuous development, education, and functioning of the Regional and local Ethics Committees.
- Collaborate with CHRISTUS leaders to ensure the development of Palliative Care throughout the CHRISTUS Health System.
- Provide ethics support to the Institutional Review Boards in CHRISTUS Health.
- As a collaborative member of the Mission Integration department, this position provides assistance and support to the priorities of the department.
Education:
- Doctorate in Ethics, Healthcare or Theology.
Experience:
- Proven experience in planning, management and implementation skills.
Skills:
- Understands and is committed to Catholic healthcare.
- Understands the Catholic Church and its teachings and the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to work as a team member; poise and clarity in group presentations.
