VICE CHANCELLOR FOR RESEARCH
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T) is a public, doctoral research, land-grant institution, and has been the largest historically Black university in the country for the past decade. With an enrollment of more than 14,000 students in the fall of 2024, the university offers 59 undergraduate degree programs, 35 master's programs, and 11 doctoral programs. It is America's top producer of Black graduates in Engineering and Agricultural Science bachelor's programs and a top-five producer in numerous additional disciplines.
Nationally recognized for its leadership and excellence in STEM education and research, N.C. A&T is classified as an "R2-High Research Activity" in the Carnegie Classifications. It also holds Carnegie's earned credential in Community Engagement and the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU) Innovation and Economic Prosperity designation. With an annual economic impact of $2.4 billion, N.C. A&T plays a vital role as a higher-education economic driver in North Carolina's Piedmont Triad region and across a state ranked No. 1 in the nation as "best for business" by the CNBC financial network.
N.C. A&T has grown steadily and substantially over the past decade, expanding its enrollment by nearly 3,300 students, its annual research and sponsored program awards by $85 million, and further developing its academic enterprise. Guided by a succession of visionary strategic plans, the university has relentlessly pursued and achieved ambitious goals to create a new model of what a 21st-century, HBCU land-grant research university can be. Its current plan, Preeminence 2030: N.C. A&T Blueprint was approved by the Board of Trustees in February 2023 and will help build a significantly larger research enterprise and economic footprint and strengthen student outcomes over the next seven years.
The Vice Chancellor for Research (VCR) will report to the newly selected Chancellor, James (Jim) R. Martin, and oversee the research enterprise across the university. As N.C. A&T seeks to become a culturally responsive R1 institution, the vice chancellor will set strategic priorities for the Division of Research and establish a vision for future growth and success. The VCR will be responsible for advancing the research goals of N.C. A&T and expanding the research funding base from federal and state agencies, foundations, and the private sector. The VCR will facilitate research, develop partnerships, and address critical issues for the research community.
The ideal candidate will have the credentials, demonstrated leadership, and administrative ability to successfully facilitate research, develop partnerships, and address critical issues for the research community. The successful candidate will also have a strong professional accomplishment record and high recognition in the academic community. An earned doctoral degree and credentials to support the rank of Professor with tenure in an appropriate academic unit are required.
We welcome applications from candidates with a broad range of research leadership experience, including those from federal agencies such as the Department of Defense (DOD), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Department of Energy (DOE), and other organizations advancing scientific innovation and national research priorities.
