Job Description

STATE TITLE: NETWORK SPECIALIST I

This position is required to work onsite at TxDMV Headquarters in Austin, TX.

Telecommuting may be necessary due to current building construction.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Our mission at the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) is to serve, protect and advance the citizens and industries in the state with quality motor vehicle related services. We are a dynamic state agency dedicated to customer service, consumer protection and the success of motor vehicle-related industries.

Performs entry-level network systems work involving the implementation, maintenance, and monitoring of local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), internet/intranet systems, and network segments. Work involves assisting in the installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of network hardware and software. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Responsible for the troubleshooting, logging of tickets, and maintenance of wide-area circuits. Works closely with Internet provider installation and support personnel.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Assists in the installation, configuration, and testing of network hardware and software components.

Monitors the status and performance of networks to ensure all systems are functioning correctly.

Performs network startup and shutdown procedures and maintains control records.

Maintains the network's physical and logical structures, including network connections and cabling.

Troubleshoots and resolves basic network issues under supervision, including network connectivity problems.

Coordinates the repair of ethernet and broadband connections with internet providers such as AT&T, Comcast, Spectrum, and other Internet providers

Assists in maintaining network security protocols and applying updates to firewalls, routers, and switches.

Documents network configurations, settings, and activities.

Supports team members in gathering data to identify system requirements and network needs.

Responds to end-user requests for assistance with basic network problems.

May travel up to 5% of the time. Travels by car (may include flying). May include overnight travel. May require working extended hours and some evenings and weekends, as needed.

Required to attend work regularly and adhere to approved work hours in accordance with department policies and procedures.

Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Basic network concepts, including LAN/WAN, routers, switches, and firewalls.

Familiarity with Cisco, Fortinet, and Meraki networking equipment

Hardware and software troubleshooting techniques.

Network operating systems and communication protocols.

Knowledge of telecommunications cabling technologies

Skill in:

Installing, configuring, and troubleshooting network devices.

Using logic and reasoning to analyze problems and propose solutions.

Communicating effectively with team members and network users.

Ability to:

Follow technical instructions and resolve basic network issues.

Recognize and escalate complex network problems to higher-level staff.

Document technical procedures and network configurations accurately.

Work effectively in a team environment.

Ability to multitask

Ability to communicate effectively with customers, technical support, and management.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

High school diploma and at least one year of experience in network systems administration.

REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSURE

A valid Class "C" driver's license is required. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within ninety (90) days after entering Texas as a new resident. A satisfactory driving record is required for operating state or personal vehicles to conduct department business.
