THIS POSITION WILL FLOAT BETWEEN THE WATER TREATMENT PLANT AND THE WASTEWATER PLANT
General Definition of Work
Performs semiskilled work in the operation and maintenance of a treatment plant, conducting regular plant inspections, recording readings, performing preventive maintenance on equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Chief Treatment Plant Operator.

Examples of Duties
Essential Functions
Conducting regular inspections of plant and equipment to ensure that it is in proper operation at all times.
Records readings from instruments; maintains records on plant operations.
Regulates and adjusts motor, pumps, blowers, valves and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions as directed by supervisor.
Checks all plant equipment and biological and chemical systems for proper operation.
Changes plant process as necessary to improve plant efficiency.
Checks and refills various chemical feeds.
Reads meters, gauges and dials and keeps logs of readings; maintains time and temperature logs.
Checks pumping stations to ensure proper operation.
Collects samples; performs minor laboratory tests.
Performs maintenance on and lubricates equipment.
Performs scheduled and emergency operations as directed.
Pumps and maintains sludge levels.
Unloads and stores supplies.
Performs general custodial and grounds maintenance work.
May be required to work outside normal work hours in on-call and emergency situations.
Completes any other duties assigned by Supervisor.
Provides excellent customer service when working with citizens, elected officials, and/or associates.
Supports the overall City organization by executing the directives as set forth by the immediate supervisor and elected officials.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Some knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a wastewater treatment plant; some knowledge of hydraulic, chemical and mechanical principles pertinent to wastewater treatment plant operations; some knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and of the necessary safety precautions; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to read meters and charts accurately; skill in the use and care of hand and power tools; mechanical aptitude; ability to operate personal computer including some knowledge of applicable software packages; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and tasting or smelling, frequently requires walking, climbing or balancing and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and occasionally requires sitting, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to wet humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires working with explosives, exposure to vibration and wearing a self contained breathing apparatus; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
Special Requirements
Possession of or ability to obtain a Grade I Wastewater Operators license within one year of employment
Possession of or ability to obtain Total/Fecal Coliform and Process Control Chemistry certifications within 2 years of employment.
Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
