Job Title: Registered Nurse - Progressive Care Unit (PCU)

Location: Johnston Memorial Hospital, 16000 Johnston Memorial Dr, Abingdon, VA 24211

Contract Length: 13 weeks

Shift: Nights - 3x12-Hour (6:30 PM - 7:00 AM)

Schedule: 36 hours/week Every other weekend required

Guaranteed Hours: 36


Compensation for 36 hours: $2,500 Per Week

  • Weekly Gross: $2,400.00 Per Week
  • On W2(Taxable): $720.00 Per Week ($20/hour)
  • Stipend (Non-Taxable): $1,780.00 Per Week

Facility Overview:

Johnston Memorial Hospital is a Ballad Health facility offering high-quality, patient-centered care to the community of Abingdon, Virginia. The Progressive Care Unit (PCU) at JMH is a 34-bed unit designed to treat adult and geriatric patients with varying acuity, including those requiring cardiac, renal, and respiratory care.


Unit Details:

  • Unit Name: JMH 3000 (PCU)
  • Number of Beds: 34
  • Patient Ratio: 1:6 (Days and Nights)
  • Scheduling Type: Block
  • Float Requirement: Yes (PCU competencies preferred)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Charting System: Epic

Job Summary:

The PCU RN will provide advanced care to a diverse patient population with acute medical needs, managing telemetry, IV medications, and continuous monitoring. Responsibilities include timely assessments, medication administration, interdisciplinary coordination, and documentation in Epic.


Required Experience & Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years of recent PCU/Telemetry/Med-Surg experience
  • Travel experience: Not required
  • Charting: Proficiency in Epic preferred
  • Licensure: Active RN license (VA or Compact) - required at submission
  • Local candidates (within 100 miles): Not accepted

Certifications (Required):

  • AHA BLS
  • AHA ACLS
  • NIHSS
  • Preferred: CPI, PALS, OCN

Key Skills & Competencies:

  • IV & Central Line Management:
  • Starting IVs, PICC line care, Blood draws, Phlebotomy
  • Central Line Management & Blood Product Administration

Respiratory Support:

  • CPAP/BiPAP, HFNC, Oxygen Masks, Chest Tubes, Tracheostomy Management

Cardiac & Emergency:

  • Telemetry (unit & remote monitoring), Dysrhythmia Interpretation, Rapid Response

Oncology (Preferred):

  • Chemotherapy Monitoring & Administration

Neurological & Endocrine:

  • CVA care, Diabetic care, Insulin administration, ABG interpretation

Additional Skills:

  • Isolation precautions, Wound care (including Wound Vac), Colostomy, GI tube management, Renal failure & Dialysis management

Common Diagnoses:

  • Sepsis, Bacteremia, AMS, Heart failure, Diabetes, Electrolyte imbalance
  • Renal failure (HD & PD), Pneumonia, Chest Pain, GI Bleeds, COVID-19, Cellulitis

Equipment & Procedures:

  • Continuous Bladder Irrigation
  • Suctioning & Oxygen Delivery Systems
  • Interpretation of telemetry and emergency monitoring

Work Environment:

  • Interdisciplinary Support Includes: Respiratory, Pharmacy, Radiology, Phlebotomy, PT, Social Services, Transport, Unit Secretaries
  • Clinical Education Role: Travelers are expected to assist in the education of nursing students alongside their clinical duties.
