Unit Overview: Surgical Services - Operating Room (OR RN)
Department: Operating Room (OR) RN
Location: Surgical Services, Floor 2

Unit Details:
  • Number of Operating Suites: 10 ORs, typically 8 rooms are actively run each day
  • Average Case Volume: 30-40 cases per day
  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR): EPIC
Staffing & Shift Information:
  • Shift Options:
    • 4x10 hour shifts (06:30-17:00)
    • 3x12 hour shifts (06:30-19:00)
  • Scheduling:
    • Call required to cover PTO
    • Weeknights: Staffed with one on-call crew (12-hour shifts)
    • Weekends: Daytime second call crew (07:00-19:00); night call primarily for PTO coverage
    • Call Frequency: 1-2 shifts every 6 weeks
    • Holidays: Call coverage as needed and may be assigned
  • Call Response Time: 30 minutes
  • Charge Nurse: Present during day shift
  • Scrub Tech Support: Certified Surgical Technologists (CSTs) and Orderlies assist with room turnovers
Floating & Orientation:
  • Floating Requirements: May float to Surgery Center across the parking lot from the main hospital
  • Orientation: 1 week unit-specific orientation with an educator provided for all travelers
Staff Requirements:
  • Certifications Required: BLS and ACLS (must be current)
  • Experience Requirements:
    • Previous travel experience is required
    • 1.5 to 2 years of recent OR RN experience preferred
  • Scrubbing Required for RNs: No
Case Types:
  • Patient Population: Pediatric to geriatric
  • Common Surgical Cases:
    • Orthopedics: Total joints, ORIFs, arthroscopies, foot/ankle; spine cases (typically not assigned to travelers)
    • General Surgery: Robotic procedures, appendectomies, cholecystectomies
    • Urology: Ureteroscopies, cystoscopies, robotic prostatectomies
    • Gynecology: Robotic-assisted surgeries, hysterectomies, hysteroscopies, laparoscopic tubal ligations, A&P repairs, D&C
    • Vascular: Fistula creation/declots, endovascular iliac/aortic stents, carotid endarterectomies, TCARs
    • Spine: Laminectomies and spinal fusions (thoracic, lumbar, cervical)
    • ENT & Podiatry: Navigated FESS, thyroid/parathyroid surgeries, septoplasties, radical necks, pediatric T&As and ear tubes
Dress Code:
  • Scrubs: Blue OR scrubs provided by the facility
  • Footwear: Designated OR shoes or shoe covers required
  • Eye Protection: Preferred that staff bring their own

  • Distance Requirement: This facility enforces a strict 50-mile radius rule.
    • Candidates must reside outside a 50-mile radius of the facility.
    • Permanent address must be included in the submission to confirm eligibility.
