Unit Overview - Inpatient Surgical / Med Surg Tele - 3rd Floor

Prescreening Process:
A clinical prescreen is required prior to submission. If the candidate is recommended, the hiring manager will respond within 24 hours to accept or decline.

Unit Details:
  • Unit Type: Med Surg / Telemetry - Inpatient Surgical (3rd Floor)
  • Number of Beds: 48 beds across two buildings
  • Nurse:Patient Ratios:
    • Nights: 1:5-6
    • LPNs available to support staff
    • Virtual nurses assist with admissions and discharges
    • Primary care nursing model is frequently used; must be comfortable working in this structure
Certifications Required:
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Common Diagnoses / Patient Types:
  • Neuro: Laminectomy, cervical fusion, LESI
  • General surgical: Ostomies, hernia repairs, total hip/knee replacements
  • Vascular: Fem-pop bypass, dialysis catheter insertions, BKA, AKA
  • Other: TPN/Lipids, PICC lines, IV antibiotics, PCA pumps, epidurals, chronic pain (narcotics), sepsis, urgent OR cases
  • Note: Dialysis unit is located on the same floor
Required Skills & Experience:
  • Minimum 1 year of surgical nursing experience
  • Must have experience with total joint replacements
  • Proficient with:
    • PCA pumps and narcotic management
    • Reversal agents (e.g., Narcan)
    • Sepsis protocols
    • TPN / Lipids
Drips & Monitoring:
  • Drip Titration: Heparin (per protocol)
  • Telemetry Monitoring:
    • Tele monitor tech on unit
    • RNs are responsible for interpreting strips
    • Monitor brand: Draeger
Staffing & Support:
  • Charge Nurse / House Supervisor:
    • Day Shift: Typically a Blessing staff nurse (Charge Nurse, smaller assignment)
    • Night Shift: May be the House Supervisor (also takes smaller assignment)
  • CNA Support: Available, though may be reassigned to sitter roles. Night shift typically has a greater need for CNA support.
  • Respiratory Equipment: CPAP (home unit), Airvo (possible), Bipap (occasional); RT manages respiratory support
Scheduling Details:
  • Shift Times: 3x12-hour shifts, start time: 7:00 AM/PM
  • Self-Scheduling: Not guaranteed; must discuss with unit leader
  • Schedules posted 6 weeks in advance
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
  • Holiday Requirement: Rotates with core staff
  • Call Requirement: None
  • Floating: To like units only; if floated to higher acuity units, the role will be support only, not taking a full patient assignment

Orientation:
  • Unit Orientation: 1 x 12-hour shift on the hiring unit and shift
  • First Day: 12-14 hours; includes competencies, modules, and general orientation
Additional Notes:
  • This is a fast-paced unit with high patient turnover
  • Expect 8-12 surgical admissions and frequent discharges daily
  • Best suited for adaptable and experienced surgical nurses comfortable with a dynamic and demanding environment
