Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical
Location: Johnston Memorial Hospital - 16000 Johnston Mem Dr, Abingdon, VA 24211
Shift: Night 4x12-Hour (18:30 - 07:00)
Guaranteed Hours: 48 hrs/week
Job Duration: 13 weeks
Number of Positions: 2
Pay for 48 hours: Gross Weekly: $3204/week
• Taxable: $1104/week ($23/hr.)
• Non-Taxable (Stipends): $2100/week
Position Overview:
The Registered Nurse (RN) will provide care on the Medical-Surgical Unit at Norton Community Hospital, delivering direct patient care, monitoring clinical indicators, and performing medical interventions while adhering to hospital protocols.
Key Responsibilities:
• Administer medications and treatments as prescribed
• Perform patient assessments and develop care plans
• Monitor vital signs and adjust care as needed
• Perform IV therapy, phlebotomy, and manage peripheral lines
• Participate in rapid response teams, manage dysrhythmias, and respond to emergencies
• Follow isolation precautions and infection control standards
• Provide respiratory care, including nasal cannula and oxygen face masks
• Educate patients and families on care and health maintenance
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (charge nurses, physicians, specialists)
• Interpret cardiac dysrhythmias and respond appropriately
• Support nursing student education and participate in clinical teaching
Job Requirements:
Experience: Minimum 1 year as an RN in medical-surgical or telemetry
• Certifications:
o AHA BLS required
o NIHSS preferred
• Skills:
o Cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia management
o IV therapy, phlebotomy, peripheral line management
o Respiratory care and isolation precautions
Other Requirements:
• BSN required for international travelers
• Permanent residence >100 miles from hospital
• Flu vaccine required (Medical/Religious exemptions only)
Preferred Experience:
• Community hospitals, LTAC, and trauma care experience
