Position Summary:
The Cytogenetic Technologist is responsible for performing all levels of general and cytogenetic testing within the analytical laboratory. This role requires a high degree of technical expertise, independent judgment, and critical thinking. The technologist ensures accurate and timely results that directly influence patient care and management. The role may include lead responsibilities and active participation in training, inspections, and laboratory initiatives.
Key Responsibilities: - Perform cytogenetic and general laboratory testing in accordance with established protocols.
- Accurately generate and report test results, including communicating critical results.
- Maintain a clean and safe working environment following all relevant policies and guidelines.
- Recognize and document variances in testing, QC, and instrument performance; perform corrective actions as needed.
- Participate in instrument operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting with proper documentation.
- Handle specimens from receipt to preparation for off-site testing, including centrifuging, aliquoting, and packaging.
- Review LIS reports to ensure timely and proper processing of all samples.
- Support and train new associates and students; contribute to team projects, meetings, and committees.
- Demonstrate knowledge and competency in laboratory computer systems.
- Promote a positive and collaborative work environment aligned with departmental and system values.
- Identify and suggest opportunities for process improvement and cost containment.
- Respond to fluctuating workload and staffing needs with flexibility and adaptability.
Float Requirements: - May be required to float to any Centura location within a 60-mile radius or within a designated float zone.
- May perform duties beyond the original assignment in line with Centura policy.
Qualifications: - Preferred Experience: 9 years of related laboratory experience.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently.
- Familiarity with laboratory quality control and regulatory compliance.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to train others and provide leadership when needed.
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
Required Qualifications: Education: Associate Degree required. Acceptable alternatives include: Completion of U.S. Military 50-week Medical Laboratory Specialist course OR Bachelor's Degree in a science field with applicable clinical experience Certification: Required: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification through ASCP, AMT, or an equivalent recognized body. Timing: Certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire if not already held.
