Job Details
- Assesses patients on admission within specified time frames considering physical, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs.
- Reassesses each patient's health needs whenever warranted and at least every shift using nursing processes.
- Establishes and updates plan of care based on data from all appropriate sources.
- Administers oral, topical, and parenteral medications using the 7 rights.
- Assesses and documents effectiveness and untoward effects of medications and treatments.
- Performs treatments and procedures following nursing practice, hospital policy, sterile technique, standard precautions, and patient privacy.
- Documents response to care, pain management, discharge planning needs, education, and progress towards goals.
- Educates patient/family based on assessed needs using 'Krames' where appropriate.
- Interprets and analyzes diagnostic data and intervenes appropriately.
- Communicates changes in patients' clinical condition promptly to physicians and healthcare team.
- Uses SBAR communication for all handoffs.
- Considers patient rights including confidentiality, safety, and participation in plan of care.
- Evaluates and documents patient care and effectiveness of patient teaching.
- Participates in multidisciplinary care planning.
- Demonstrates knowledge and application of restraint criteria and management per policy.
- Follows National Patient Safety Goals and hospital policies including use of two patient identifiers.
- Understands Disaster Plan and own role; knows how to activate Rapid Response Team.
- Completes orientation to Life Safety Standards including Code Blue, Code Pink, Haz Mat Spills, Code Red, Oxygen shut off valve.
- Follows hospital infection control policies.
- Demonstrates knowledge of blood transfusion policy and documentation.
- Understands Chain of Command and accesses it appropriately.
- Familiar with Labor and Delivery policies and routine.
- Manages patient in labor appropriately.
- Manages newborn immediately post delivery appropriately.
- Utilizes APGAR scale to assess neonate within first five minutes of birth.
- Recognizes signs and symptoms of fetal distress and performs standard nursing interventions.
- Documents appropriately on Labor & Delivery flow sheet and other forms.
- Assists physician with placement of UIPC and fetal scalp electrode.
- Reviews fetal monitor strips for signs of fetal distress.
- Applies external fetal monitor and positions sono and tocotransducer correctly to monitor Fetal Heart Tones and Uterine Activity.
- Identifies changes in patient condition (fetal distress, Magnesium hypertoxicity, etc.) and notifies physician.
- Accurately assesses DTR's and Magnesium Sulfate level during management of patients receiving Magnesium Sulfate for pre-term labor and PIH.
Job Requirements
- 3 years recent Labor & Delivery experience in acute care facility.
- California RN License required.

- Mixed shifts including days and nights.
Unit Specific Information
- Labor and Delivery unit experience and knowledge required.
