JOB TITLE: Assistant Athletic Coach - High School

CLASSIFICATION: Extra Comp

SUPERVISOR: Building Principal

CONTRACT: Athletic Season

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Assistant Coach will work to carry out the aims and objectives of the sport program as outlined by the Head Coach. The Assistant Coach is to instruct athletes in individual and team fundamentals, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success.

It is the intent of this job description to give sufficient guidance to function. In case not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment.

The Assistant Coach supervises athletes and teams assigned to him/her and assumes supervising control over all athletes in program when such control is needed.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The Assistant Coach is responsible to the building principal and to Head Coach.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Has a thorough knowledge of all the Athletic Policies endorsed by the Medford School District Board of Education and is responsible for its compliance.
  2. Has knowledge of Oregon School Activities Association rules and regulations as well as Southern Oregon Conference Guidelines; implements those same consistently and is responsible for compliance.
  3. Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels.
  4. Works to increase morale and cooperation within the school's entire athletic program.
  5. Knows effective safety procedures in their sport, plans and implements a program of instruction in safe practices.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

  1. Assists the Head Coach in scheduling and making travel arrangements when asked.
  2. Works with the Head Coach to prepare and adhere to scheduled facility times.
  3. Assists the Head Coach in matters related to compliance with district and OSAA requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent forms, insurance waivers, and academic/residence eligibility.
  4. Assists the Head Coach in providing proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment and facilities and teaching the planned safety program.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Supervises the athletes before, during, and after practices, contests, or while traveling, and provides by his/her presence proper guidance and safeguards for each participant.
  2. Follows program, implemented by the Head Coach, related to injuries, medical attention, and emergencies. Works cooperatively with the athletic trainer in matters of injury, prevention, and the care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
  3. Directs student managers, assistants and statisticians on respective teams.
  4. Determines discipline, in accordance with State, district, and school guidelines, policies and procedures. Teaches athletes rules and procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary. Contacts parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible for team rule infractions.

EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES
  1. Is accountable to the Head Coach for all equipment and assists in identifying lost or stolen equipment, and issuing fine and hold notices to Activities Office.
  2. Monitors equipment rooms and coaches office and authorizes who may enter.
  3. Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness of the facility.
  4. Secures all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving building if custodians are not on duty.
  5. Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.

PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Assists the Head Coach in carrying out his/her responsibilities.
  2. Instructs team members as to changes in the rules and teaches fundamentals of the sport as outlined by the Head Coach.
  3. Maintains a record of team statistics and requirements for lettering as assigned by the Head Coach.
  4. Works within the basic framework and philosophy of the Head Coach of that sport.
  5. Attends all staff meetings as required by the Head Coach.
  6. Arrives early enough before practice and contests to adequately prepare and remains long enough afterwards to help players with problems or to become involved with staff discussions.
  7. Helps in the planning and implementation of both in-season and off-season conditioning and weight programs.
  8. Never criticizes, admonishes, or argues with the Head Coach or any staff member within ears or eyes of players, parents, or fans.
  9. Strives to improve skills by attending clinics and using resources made available by the Head Coach.
  10. Attends most of the contests, when possible, of other teams in the program.
  11. Performs other such duties that are consistent with the nature of the position and that may be requested by the Head Coach.

MINIMUM SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge:
  1. Of rules and regulations of the sport to which assigned.
  2. Of fundamentals, techniques, and strategies of the sport to which assigned.
  3. Of safety factors involved in the sport assigned.
  4. Of physical ability and limitations of the level he/she is teaching.
  5. Of the Medford School District Athletic Policies and OSAA Rules and Regulations.

Skills:
  1. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with people.
  2. Must be able to demonstrate basic skills of sport to which assigned.
  3. Must have the ability to organize, supervise, and evaluate the total sport program.

Attitudes:
  1. Must be positive.
  2. Should be enthusiastic.
  3. Should possess a willingness to cooperate and to adjust to various situations.

Experience:
  1. Previous coaching experience of sport to which assigned is preferred.
  2. Previous experience as participant of sport to which assigned preferred.
  3. Previous teaching experience preferred.

Education:
  1. Valid Oregon teacher certification is preferred.
  2. College training in coaching desirable.
