RESPONSIBILITIES:
Highlights of the role include:
Product testing and validation development
- Review and thoroughly understand product schematics and client requirements for the fire detection products including smoke, CO, and heat sensors for commercial and residential markets
- Create and execute testing and validation procedures for each product assigned
- Guarantee that the product tests meet agency requirements. (Agencies include UL, ULC, FM, CSFM, FCC, CE, EN-54, and CCCF.
- Ensure that each electrical component, system and even testing equipment are properly functioning in excellent condition
- Test products using various tools like computer software, surface mount technology (SMT), electrical equipment (such as oscilloscopes and multi-meters) and specific testing techniques (such as smoke boxes, heat tunnels, environmental chambers, etc.)
- Use HPQC (Hewitt Packard Quality Center) testing procedures to develop programs for hardware and software operation
- Record all testing processes and log all defects in the HPQC
- Troubleshoot with the engineering department when issues are found when testing
- Collaborate with other test engineers as well as the design engineers on various product development projects in order to maintain constant communication among teams
- Maintain all assigned test plans and schedules for assigned projects
Management of the engineering test lab
- Assist in the maintenance of the testing lab, ensuring that the lab equipment and system samples are organized
- Maintain installation instructions and manuals in the lab
- Archive test processes and results
- Ensure that there is a clean, safe, and organized common workspace
Desired Skills and Experience
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Engineering Test Technician with a strong electrical or mechanical engineering background to support testing and validation of life-safety fire detection products. The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills in testing and troubleshooting, as well as the interpersonal and communication skills to thrive in a collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Product Testing & Validation
Review product schematics and client specifications for fire detection systems (smoke, CO, and heat sensors)
Develop and execute comprehensive testing procedures for each product
Perform validation tests to meet global compliance standards (UL, ULC, CE, FM, EN-54, CSFM, FCC, CCCF)
Operate and maintain test environments including smoke boxes, heat tunnels, CO test chambers, and environmental chambers
Use multimeters, oscilloscopes, and other test equipment to measure voltage (up to 20V), current, resistance - applying strong understanding of Ohm's Law
Log and track defects and test outcomes using HPQC (Hewlett Packard Quality Center)
Work closely with engineering teams to troubleshoot and resolve hardware/software issues
Lab Management
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe lab environment
Ensure testing equipment is calibrated, functional, and properly stored
Organize system samples, installation manuals, and test documentation
Archive all test plans, results, and processes for reference and compliance
Required Qualifications:
3-4 years of experience in an electrical or mechanical engineering environment
Proficient in electrical testing tools (multimeter, soldering tools, oscilloscopes, etc.)
Solid understanding of Ohm's Law and low-voltage electrical systems ( 20V)
Experience working with compliance/certification standards (UL, CE, etc.)
Strong PC skills and the ability to manage software-based test procedures
Familiarity with HPQC or similar quality/test management tools
