Under the supervision of the Customer Services Manager performs all duties with an exceptional customer experience focus. Assists Customer Services Manager in providing work direction to the Customer Service Attendants in the Savanna Grill and other food service locations throughout the zoo, ensures food & supply inventory is stocked appropriately in all food delivery locations and any needs identified to Customer Services Manager daily. Takes pride in providing an excellent customer experience for our guests. Understands the importance of nourishing team member's motivation and support, and is naturally passionate about conserving the earth and its resources.

Prepares quality food options for our guests ensuring current health code standards are met/or exceeded. Participates in menu development. Completes required reports. Supports others in properly maintaining all equipment in designated work areas. Ensures dining and customer seating areas are clean and in a sanitary condition for our guests. Communicates required repair or maintenance needs effectively. Provides effective cash drawer and change bag management. Performs duties of the customer service attendant as needed and always leads by example.

Essential Functions

  1. Demonstrates and inspires others in friendly and helpful customer service techniques.
  2. Performs meal preparation, customer service delivery, inventory, and clean-up duties daily.
  3. Takes initiative in guest dining, seating, and display areas to ensure a 'fresh' look and feel for our guests throughout the day.
  4. Exhibits a positive, "can-do", "guest-first" approach with all guests, as well as co-workers.
  5. Assists Customer Services Manager in providing work direction and support to food services temporary Customer Service Attendants.
  6. Verifies nightly cash drops, counts drawers, and sets up for next day's business.
  7. Participates in preparation of weekly food order, and is creative in menu development.
  8. Requests needed supplies, such as food inventory, office supply, cleaners, etc. and resupplies all daily work areas as needed.
  9. Prepares assigned reports in a timely manner.
  10. Demonstrates professionalism in all interactions with zoo membership, daily visitors, and zoo staff team members at all times.
  11. Ensures all scheduled group food reservations are delivered with the highest quality and on time, communicating with group leaders upon their arrival to the zoo.
  12. Addresses visitor complaints, problems, inquiries and accident reports according to Zoo guest relations procedures. Resolves guest experience related issues using good business judgment and elevating, as appropriate, to the Customer Services Manager.
  13. Assists in orientation of newly hired staff through job shadow opportunities and always leading by example.
  14. Performs routine cleaning and food service maintenance within established schedules.
  15. Performs an end-of-season deep clean of each food service work area and inventory of each work areas supplies, to be coordinated with Customer Services Manager.
  16. Available for other duties and assignments in the AniMall gift shop, or other areas of zoo during off peak season.
Other Functions:
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Must adhere to departmental standards in regard to State of Michigan Food Safety Code, HIPAA and other privacy issues.
  • During a public health emergency, the employee may be required to perform duties similar to, but not limited, to those in his/her job description.

Employment Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Experience:
  • One year prior food preparation, cash handling, and customer service experience required.
  • Ability to successfully complete ServSafe Certifications within first 90 days or be current in ServSafe Food Handler & ServSafe Allergens certifications.
Other Requirements:
  • Knowledgeable and proficient in Zoo's point-of-sale (POS) system in order to accurately and efficiently process guests' transactions in compliance with Zoo policies; Ensures accurate processing of sales, returns, gift certificates, special orders, or other duties as assigned by Customer Services Manager.
  • A desire to develop new culinary skills as part of a continual quest to improve operations.
  • Energy and willingness to perform required kitchen, dining plaza, and work area cleanings in preparation for zoo guests throughout the day.
  • Aptitude to work as a team-player in daily practice of the zoos core values and mission.
  • Must possess patience, flexibility, initiative, organization, responsibility, and a strong work ethic utilizing these traits in providing dependable work performance each day.
  • Capacity to respectfully give and receive feedback.

Requirements and Working Conditions
Working Conditions:
  1. This position works in both an indoor and outdoor environment. While indoors, there is no planned exposure to notable lights, noises, odors, temperatures or weather conditions. While outdoors, exposure to lights, noises, odors, temperatures or weather conditions cannot be controlled and may be extreme.
  2. This position operates non-powered hand tools such as kitchen knives, utility knives, hammers, pliers, wrenches, screwdrivers, chisels, saws, etc.
  3. This position is exposed to variety of hazards such as traffic, moving vehicles, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, slippery surfaces, chemicals, cleaning solutions, oils, hazardous materials, etc.
  4. This position is exposed to air quality conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, etc.
  5. This position is exposed to noise levels which require shouting in order to be heard.
  6. This position is provided, and required to use, Personal Protection Equipment to minimize the risks associated with the working conditions listed above.

Physical Requirements:
  • This position requires the ability to stand, traverse, climb, balance, walk, twist, bend, stoop/crouch, squat, kneel, lift, carry, push, pull, reach, grasp, handle, pinch, type, and endure repetitive movements of the wrists, hands or fingers.
  • This position's physical requirements require continuous stamina (more than 50%) in standing, twisting, bending, reaching, grasping, handling, pinching and enduring repetitive movements of the wrists, hands or fingers.
  • This position performs medium work requiring the ability to exert between 20-50 pounds of force in the physical requirements above.
  • This position primarily requires close visual acuity to perform tasks within arm's reach such as: viewing a computer screen, using measurement devices, inspecting and assembling parts, etc.
  • This position requires the ability to communicate and respond to inquiries both in person and over the phone.
  • This position requires the ability to operate a PC/laptop and to enter & retrieve information from a computer.
  • This position requires the ability to handle varying and often high levels of stress.
