TELECOMMUNICATIONS ENGINEER I/II/III/SR
Position Summary
Acts as escalated technical support for voice, video and security networks at the university. This position is responsible for audio, video management system, and access control troubleshooting, which requires the ability to design and implement complex deployments.
Required Qualifications
Telecommunications Engineer I
One year of experience in telecommunications or a related field.
Experience with different server environments including Windows, Linux, and custom appliances.
Capable of applying knowledge of telecommunication and IP networking principles and protocols.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Self-motivated, yet a team player.
Ability to work independently, manage small and low complexity projects, and exercise judgement in reaching solutions.
Flexibility to work in related business lines, if required.
Exposure to either physical security software or communication software.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
Telecommunications Engineer II
All the qualifications of Telecommunications Engineer I, plus:
One year of experience in telecommunications or a related field.
Experience working with different carriers and external connections.
Experience working with databases and basic scripting.
Outstanding critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.
Ability to prioritize impactful work.
Exposure to physical security software and collaboration platforms
Telecommunications Engineer III
All the qualifications of Telecommunications Engineer II, plus:
Three years of experience in telecommunications or a related field.
Experience with RS485, IP, and ISDN network technologies.
Experience with the design and implementation of enterprise wide Cisco telephony projects, including core infrastructure HW/SW and disaster recovery.
Ability to script solutions for task automation across diverse data sets.
In depth knowledge of physical security software and collaboration platforms.
Senior Telecommunications Engineer
All the qualifications of Telecommunications Engineer III, plus:
Five years of experience in telecommunications or a related field.
Experience supporting multi-vendor technology solutions.
Mastery of telecommunications topics including telephony, access control, video management systems, networking.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with access control hardware.
Experience managing large numbers of disparate endpoints (phones, cameras, access control hardware).
Experience working with various communications networks.
Strong knowledge of security technology (Video Surveillance Management, IP Cameras, Analytics, Access Control solutions).
Mastery of network protocols and design as it relates to telecommunications solutions.
Duties & Responsibilities
Telecommunications Engineer I
Works with the Telecommunications teams to understand scope, prepare deliverables, and provide project updates.
Develops documents, drawings / diagrams, specifications, and testing procedures under the guidance of a senior engineer.
Firmware updates on standalone systems.
Creates documentation for new systems, updates and corrects existing documentation, and removes irrelevant documentation as systems are decommissioned and disposed of.
Collaborates with the team to map out communication network using equipment such as session border controllers, B2BUA, registrar, and analog gateways.
Generates bills of material for Telecommunication equipment and verifies field installations.
Assists with writing project scopes, sequencing plans, client roadmaps, and budgets.
Works with others to stage and plan installation and commissioning.
Attends external and internal meetings to support processes.
Proactively troubleshoots, assesses and coordinates equipment and system repair as required.
Must be a participating member of the ON CALL rotating schedule, 24/7.
Trains staff and the university community on physical security, access control, and unified communication technology.
Patches devices for security vulnerabilities and adoption of new features.
Assists with incident response and resolution.
Responds to monitoring and alerting, investigating and corelating system faults.
Management of video conference facilities, including reservations, training, and related functions.
Evaluates user requests concerning database development for a variety of telecommunication systems including call center and high-quality interactive video.
Other duties as assigned.
Telecommunications Engineer II
All the duties of Telecommunications Engineer I, plus:
Collaborates on the design of utility-based telecommunication systems.
Configures call routing, control and restriction.
Ensures availability of telecommunications networks.
Configuration of medium complexity services, circuitry, applications, and software.
Writes reports aggregating data from different source database.
Basic scripting and code updates.
Understanding of service monitoring, expanding monitoring and alerting to include existing unmonitored systems.
Implements changes to any procedures that would improve operational efficiencies.
Responsible for maintaining the security of Central Michigan University's unified communications and voice mail systems.
Implements changes to telecommunications and/or subsystems.
Telecommunications Engineer III
All the duties of Telecommunications Engineer II, plus:
Configuration of complex redundant services, circuity, scripts, and software.
Concurrent monitoring and alerting expansion as new systems are added to landscape.
Implements the latest technological advances.
Plans change to telecommunications systems.
Senior Telecommunications Engineer
All the duties of Telecommunications Engineer III, plus:
Provides leadership to junior team members and staff.
Designs and integrates complex service, circuitry, applications and software.
Serves as a subject matter expert for telecommunications systems.
Provides system analysis, cost analysis, and design analysis.
Designs telecommunications systems.
Provides leadership of staff and solutions for disaster recovery strategy.
Researches and plans latest technological advances.
