Brief Job Overview

This is a key hands-on supervisory position in USP's Reference Standards laboratory. In this role, the Team Lead, Senior Scientist II is responsible for a team of scientists conducting routine and non-routine analyses of reference materials by appropriate analytical methods as part of USP collaborative testing program and other relevant programs. The Team Lead, Senior Scientist II assigns tests to their team members, provides technical oversight, solves technical problems, reviews generated data, generates and issues high quality reports, and serves as point of contact with Reference Standards Scientists to resolve any encountered issues. The Team Lead, Senior Scientist II performs the performance assessments of team members and oversees their career development.

The individual is recognized as subject matter expert in analytical chemistry with strong problem-solving abilities

The Team Lead, Senior Scientist II has the following responsibilities:

  • Will lead a team of scientists in bringing projects to completion with a high degree of scientific expertise.
  • Is responsible for ensuring full utilization of assigned staff members, working closely with their supervisor to manage workloads.
  • Takes responsibility for their team members' compliance with SOPs and procedures.
  • Interacts collaboratively with QA, responds to internal QA audits, and participates in ISO 17025 and 9001 audits.
  • Works closely with the department management for technical direction, assigning projects, and managing project deadlines.
  • Works closely with other members of USP staff and cross functional teams to solve technical issues, improve processes, and introduce innovative approaches to laboratory work.
  • Applies personal experience, academic training, and technical insights including emerging sciences to solve highly complex technical problems within the laboratory.
  • Possesses both experience and proven track record of introducing new or innovative technologies to the laboratory.

Who is USP Looking For?

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of our mission, commitment to excellence through inclusive and equitable behaviors and practices, ability to quickly build credibility with stakeholders, along with the following competencies and experience:

  • Ph.D. in Science and 10 years of relevant laboratory experience, or
  • M.S. in Science and 12 years of relevant laboratory experience, or
  • B.A. /B.S. in Science and 15 years of relevant laboratory experience.

Additional Desired Preferences

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and prior experience in dealing with conflict and/or differences of opinions in a workplace.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficient with testing involving compendial methods for raw materials (USP, BP, EP, etc.).
  • Thorough understanding and working knowledge of USP-NF monographs and General Chapters.
  • Expert in HPLC and/or GC analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of other analytical techniques, method development, and troubleshooting.
  • Hands-on knowledge of LC/MS or GC/MS.
  • Skilled to lead projects and build technical expertise in RSL by serving as a role model and mentor.
  • Skilled to anticipate, troubleshoot, and solve technical problems.
  • The ability to influence others outside their reporting structure.
  • Excellent project management skills and the capability to plan, direct, and conduct research independently and for the team.
  • Proven ability to be an effective contributor to teams working to implement new processes and initiatives.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Yes, a small group scientist ranging from Scientist I to Senior Scientist II.

Compensation

Base Salary Range: USD $127,250.00 $160,750.00 annually.

Target Annual Bonus: % Varies based on level of role

Individual compensation packages are based on various factors unique to each candidates skill set, experience, qualifications, equity, and other job-related reasons.
