Scope Of Responsibilities:
  • Instructs students in history, aesthetics, criticism, and production in talent area in which students have been identified talented: visual art, drama, or music.

Performance Responsibilities/ Essential Functions:
  • Develops a curriclum appropriate to meeting the needs of each talented student as dictated by the individual education program.
  • Completes accurately, neatly, and on time all records and reports.
  • Encourages parent interest and is available for conferences in order to keep the parent informed of the student's progress and needs.
  • Acts as a resource to administrators, teacher, and parents for drama, music, or visual arts.
  • Creates an aesthetic environment in which students can develop their individual talents.
  • Provides opportunities for students to demonstrate their talents to appropriate audiences.
  • Fosters an understanding of the arts which goes beyond representation by encouraging students to use creative thought processes.
  • Performs all other duties assigned by the principal.

Work Environment / Hours Worked:
  • A talent education teacher is required to work in a school setting.
  • The talent education teacher may be itinerant; therefore, the work day consists of the number of hours required of teachers at the school at which the gifted education teacher signs in on any given day.
  • The talent teacher may sometimes work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by job responsibilites.

Communication Skills:
  • A talent education teacher must be able to communicate in English both orally and in writing; must have the ability to accurately give and receive information both in person and via a telecommunication system; must be able to communicate successfully and pleasantly with students, peers, supervisors, and the community.

Equipment Used:
  • Telephone, computer, Xerox machine, videocassette recorder and monitor, video camera, audio cassette recorder.
  • Music education teachers: musical instruments, as appropriate.
  • Visual arts teachers: media, as appropriate.

Physical Involvement:
  • The teacher must be able to operate audio-visual and office equipment.
  • Standing, walking, reaching,bending, and lifting up to ten pounds is sometimes required.
  • The teacher must have the ability to provide own transportation to schools, work locations, and meeting sites.
  • Mobility skills are necessary to access a variety of work locations.

Mental Involvement:
  • The teacher must understand and interpret written and verbal instructions from supervisor; the teacher must be able to manage, direct, supervise, and evaluate student learning activities.

Human Relations Involvement:
  • The teacher must be able to work compatibly in group settings; must be able to respond positively to supervision and to accept suggestions for improvement; serves as liaison between the school and community.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Valid Louisiana teaching certificate
  • Master's Degree
  • Ancillary certification in talent area of music, visual arts, or drama
  • Three years' successful teaching experience.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Will vary with specific positions.

Physical Involvement:
  • Must be able to operate office equipment.
  • Standing, walking, reaching, bending, and lifting up to 10 pounds is required.
