The Position
Systems Specialist

The City of Ontario has an exciting opportunity for candidates interested in the position of a Systems Specialist. The Systems Specialist performs a wide range of analytical work assignments supporting Citywide information technology. Under direction of Systems Analysts, the Systems Specialist helps departments with defining information system needs, assisting with system integrations, and performing functional/technical maintenance and support as well as assisting with project implementations. Additionally, a Systems Specialist may lead small or less complex Information Technology projects.
The ideal candidate will be a team player; have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with a customer service orientation; and possess outstanding analytical and problem solving skills. Additionally, the successful candidate will be a role model for the City's Customer Service Philosophy- Empathy, Respect, and Problem Solving- and emulate the qualities of a "Five Tool Player"- Leader, Thinker, Operator, Communicator, and Public Servant.

Examples of Essential Functions

The essential functions typically performed by the Systems Specialist include the following:
  • Provides guidance and support for several Citywide information technology systems and applications.
  • Assists in the maintenance and updates of Citywide information technology systems and applications.
  • Trains functional users in efficient application operation and report writing.
  • Supports digital exchange of data across various information management systems.
  • Manipulates and analyzes data from a variety of database environments.
  • Assists in the preparation and maintains documentation of systems, programs, and projects to describe program development, logic, coding, and corrections.
  • Develops reports designed to address user specific needs for information.
  • Assists in the development of manuals describing installation and operating procedures for end users.
  • Identifies improvements and enhancements to current systems based upon business requirements.
  • Tests new software releases, patches and updates; identifies technical and functional problems.
  • Serves as a project team leaders for small sized or less complex projects.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
Qualification Guidelines

Education

Equivalent to an associate's degree or related coursework or completion of related certifications from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. Additional related experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

Experience
Six (6) months of experience operating or supporting information management systems. Six (6) months experience working at an administrative intern or apprentice level within the City of Ontario Information Technology Agency would meet experience requirements.

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in computer science, information technology, or a related field may substitute for experience requirements.

License

Valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment.

Desirable
Knowledge of databases related to area of assignment; training and certifications related to area of assignment; background in or working knowledge of government operations, particularly at the municipal level.

Background Investigation

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to successfully complete a background investigation conducted by the Ontario Police Department.
