Job Description:


Clark University's Information Technology Services Department seeks to fill the position of Systems Administrator. Reporting to the Systems Administration Manager, the successful candidate will maintain enterprise-level computing infrastructure to ensure a reliable, secure, and available computing environment for the Clark community. They will collaborate with a team of systems administrators and other ITS Staff to provide this service, troubleshoot problems, and to provide an integrated, easy-to-use environment.
  • As part of a team of System Administrators, maintain hardware and software for enterprise level Linux and Windows computing, (both virtualized and physical systems) and coordinate all aspects of maintenance, working with other members of the Clark community as required, to ensure availability.
  • Provide redundancy and cross training in different systems administrations roles.
  • Provide technical support and serve as an escalation point to resolve system and/or application issues and monitor, resolve and/or coordinate the resolution of escalated trouble tickets.
  • Perform general server administration duties including installing, configuring, and testing servers, applying appropriate service packs and hot fixes, automating operational procedures, performing maintenance of user accounts and system security policies, creating and updating documentation, creating and implementing monitoring systems, implementing daily backup procedures and executing recovery procedures when necessary.
  • Respond to emergencies or outages as needed; schedule maintenance when appropriate; recommend modifications to systems or services, including upgrades, additions, or deletions, and provide analysis and justification for recommendation, which may include operational data, feasibility, technological motivations, customer demand or need.
  • Develop and/or contribute to and review user-related documentation on ITS services, support standards and security policies as developed by technical support staff; assist with the preparation and maintenance of documentation for system operations, services, policies and backup/recovery procedures.
  • Serve as application administrator for a subset of the enterprise applications inventory as delegated by the manager, providing installation, upgrades, troubleshooting, and liaising with software vendors and stakeholders.
  • Stay abreast of appropriate hardware and software news and features through various web sites, magazines, internet news and email lists.
  • Perform other duties as needed by the department and defined by the supervisor.

Requirements:
  • BS in computer science or related discipline (comparable work experience may be considered in lieu of the specified degree requirement).
  • A solid background in Linux Systems Administration, preferably with RedHat and workalikes (Rocky, Oracle Enterprise Linux).
  • Familiarity with Windows Server, Microsoft Failover Cluster Manager, and Microsoft Hyper-V.
  • Functional knowledge of standards-based networking applications, account management processes, and Active Directory, as well as DNS, DHCP, HTTP, NFS, SAMBA, ADFS, SAML, etc.
  • Experience with Microsoft 365, Entra ID, and Azure Administration.
  • Experience with at least one scripting language, such as PowerShell, Python, Bash or Perl.
  • Work independently and in a team.
  • Manage multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
  • Maintain awareness of deadlines and deliverables.
  • Effectively communicate progress and issues to relevant personnel.
  • Strong documentation, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Interact effectively with individuals of varying computer literacy levels.
  • Establish collaborative working relationships at all levels within the university.
  • Strong analytical and active listening skills.
  • High degree of integrity regarding computer security and confidentiality.
  • Experience with and contribution to a diverse workplace.
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
  • Applicable industry certifications.
  • High Performance Computing experience
  • Substantial Windows Server system administration experience, including Active Directory and Hyper-V.
  • Experience with CommVault or other enterprise backup software
  • Experience with orchestration and automation in the datacenter, including tools like Ansible, Salt, Puppet, SCCM, SCVMM, or other automation platforms.
  • Experience with containers, containerization, and specific container technologies such as Docker, Docker Swarm, Podman, Kubernetes, etc.
  • Experience with Splunk (or other managed logging infrastructure), data center security, and enterprise networking.
  • Experience with enterprise storage such as NetApp, EMC, Pure.
