JOB SUMMARY

Under General Supervision, monitors activities in City pool facilities to assure public safety and compliance with rules and regulations; organizes and teaches all levels of swimming and water safety courses in accordance with Red Cross standards; maintains equipment and facilities in a clean and safe condition.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Duties may include but are not limited to monitoring aquatic facilities and guests; prevent accidents by assuring compliance to rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; perform rescue of patrons in danger of drowning, resuscitates patrons as necessary, call for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) when needed, and administers first aid; and maintain equipment and facilities in a clean and safe condition; teach all levels of instructional aquatic programs, based upon Red Cross standards, to different age groups, persons with disabilities, and individual with varying aquatic abilities; maintains class roster; and develops lesson plans; participates in routine maintenance of pools, aquatics equipment, and aquatic facilities; cleans and maintains pool area, locker rooms, restrooms, staff office and all other aquatic facility areas; performs regular water tests and monitors pool chemical balance; maintains inventory of aquatics equipment and supplies; maintains locker rooms, restrooms, staff lobby, and offices in a clean and safe manner; maintains accurate records and prepares various reports including accident/incident reports; provides exceptional customer service and information to patrons; reports and resolves complaints, special requests, safety conditions, and security concerns appropriately; works cooperatively with other City employees and the public; exhibits integrity and displays ethical behavior; performs other duties as assigned.

The incumbent may work a schedule of hours which may include nights, early mornings, weekends, and holidays.

This position is limited to 988 hours per Fiscal Year.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

A combination of education, training, and work experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the position is qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:

Education: Attending training and/or educational programs that resulted in issuance of required certifications.

Experience: One (1) year of experience as a pool or beach lifeguard.

Required Licenses and Certifications:
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
  • American Red Cross Advanced Lifesaving
  • American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • American Red Cross Standard or Multi-Media First Aid
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training (desirable but not required)
  • A valid California Class C Driver's License (desirable but not required)
Knowledge Of:
  • Basic customer service.
  • Beginning through advanced swim strokes, diving, and other swimming specialties.
  • Swimming and lifesaving techniques.
  • Principles and practices of first aid.
  • Policies, rules, and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons using the pool.
Ability To:
  • Teach swimming and lifesaving methods.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Explain and enforce safety rules, practices, and procedures.
  • Perform maintenance and cleaning services of pool, aquatic equipment, and aquatic facilities.
Physical Tasks and Environmental Conditions:

The majority of work is performed in outdoor swimming pools. An incumbent sits, stands, walks, and runs on slippery and uneven surfaces, kneels, crouches, twists, climbs ladders at an incline, swims, reaches, bends, crawls, and pushes, pulls, drags, grasps and lifts pool/community center equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.

An incumbent will have exposure to pool chemicals, water, cleaning solvents, disinfectants, electrical, and mechanical hazards. An incumbent must be able to meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision, hearing, and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.
