Job Description:

The Apprentice role allows candidates to complete a surgical technologist training program while learning on-the-job to develop industry-specific skills. As a member of the surgical team, the Surgical Technologist ensures the operative procedure goes smoothly, efficiently, and complies with all safety processes and policies. Apprentices enrolled in the program will be integrated into the OR team; upon successful completion of the training program the apprentice may be hired as a Surgical Technologist. This position will function under the supervision of an instructor, preceptor, and Registered Nurse and reports to Surgical Operations management. The work experience is related to the Apprentice's specific role and will support Intermountain Health's mission, vision, and values. About the Program:
•   Intermountain Health has partnered with Salt Lake Community College's (SLCC) Surgical Technology program to create an apprenticeship program that tightens connections between training and the workplace.
•   Intermountain Health will sponsor up to 9 apprentices for the fall 2025 class.
•   The program will require full-time attendance as a student at SLCC's Surgical Technology Program in West Jordan, Utah and requires routine check-ins with a supervisor from Intermountain Health.
•   During the school year, apprentices will work at our hospitals surgical services areas for short shifts (before classes) to observe and learn key on-the-job skills that support surgery. What we offer:
•   Get paid to go to school (36 hours/wk. during school. 40 hours/wk. for required clinical externship hours).
•   Paid tuition for the Surgical Technology program classes at SLCC.
•   Ongoing mentorship throughout the program.
•   Job placement after graduation with Intermountain. Who is eligible for the Program?
•   Both current Intermountain caregivers and non-Intermountain employees are eligible to apply (Preference will be given to internal candidates) Minimum Requirements:

Intermountain Requirements:
•   High School diploma or GED equivalent
•   Current CPR/BLS card from the American Heart Association
•   Legally authorized to work in the United States
•   Candidates must speak, read, and write in English
•   Caregivers accepted into this program are required to sign an agreement prior to beginning the program to work for Intermountain for at least one year (2080 hours) after they complete the program.
•   Students will pay for SLCC and the Surgical Tech. program enrollment fees, all prerequisite courses, school supplies, uniforms,&books.
•   Caregivers must be in good standing with Intermountain Health by meeting expectations in their current position. (Corrective actions received in the last year can impact standing).
•   Student completes all SLCC's surgical technology program requirements (See Steps to Apply 4 below)
•   You will not be considered for sponsorship until you have been accepted into the SLCC Surgical Technology program (see Steps to Apply below).
•   You will be contacted for an interview or more information by the selection committee. Your patience is greatly appreciated. SLCC Surgical Technologist Program Requirements:
•   Candidate must apply and meet all SLCC College requirements to be accepted into their Employer sponsored surgical technology program (Steps to Apply 1- 4 below).
•   All prerequisites must be completed at the time of application.
•   SLCC application submission deadlines are as follows:
•   January 15 - May 15, 2025 (Priority review for applicants).
•   If position's haven't been filled by the priority review deadline, a secondary deadline will be opened from June 1 - August 1, 2025. Job Essentials:
•   Attends intermountain health and apprenticeship program orientations and completes all required paperwork and documentation before a starting apprenticeship.
•   Completes all mandatory training as assigned.
•   Maintains good performance and attendance with Intermountain Health and SLCC.
•   Ensures the operating room and surgical items meet disinfection and sterilization criteria.
•   Maintains sterile field and safe environment.
•   Under the direction of a preceptor, the apprentice prepares the operating room and instruments for surgical procedures.
•   Assists the surgical team during the procedure within their scope of practice.
•   After the procedure, cleans room and prepares for the next procedure in compliance with the established protocol.
•   Demonstrates ability to consistently maintain a good rapport and positive demeanor with colleagues and customers. Steps to Apply:

All candidates must apply and be accepted to the SLCC Surgical Technology Program (Employer Sponsored Cohort) for the Fall 2025 to be eligible for sponsorship from Intermountain Health. Please complete the following steps:

2.) Meet early with a Surgical Technology Academic Advisor Surg Tech Academic Advisor webpageto ensure that all prerequisites&submission requirements are completed before applying to the Surgical technology program(When completed, move to the next step)

3.) Complete the SLCC Surgical Technology Program's steps to become eligible for their programSLCC Steps to complete before application to the ST program. (When completed, move to the next step)

5.) Apply for the SLCC Surgical Technology Program SLCC ST Program application webpageand follow the guidelines and application steps:
•   Click on "Discover" (Found on the top left under the 3 horizontal lines next to the SLCC logo)>Type in "Selective Admissions Forms
•   Click on "start here" under Health Sciences Programs if you're a first-time applicant
•   Click on "here" Under apply to open admissions sessions if you've already registered for the Health Sciences Admissions Portal
•   Choose Surgical Technology Employer Sponsored Cohort in the application
•   Your SLCC Surgical Technology application will be reviewed by the Health Sciences admissions office and you will be notified if any requirements are missing. 6.) Apply for the Intermountain Health job

•   Please note caregivers who are accepted into the cohort won't be able to utilize tuition reimbursement for their textbooks, or miscellaneous fees.
