Overview

Atrium Health Mercy 4 South is a 20-bed adult Progressive Care / Step Down ICU unit is Atrium Health Mercy's newest unit. This is a great opportunity to join the Atrium Health family and to be a part of the growth and development of this exciting new unit. The patients in the PCU tend to have complex, chronic diseases and require complex nursing skills with diagnoses including sepsis, renal failure, respiratory failure, DKA, and intervention with titratable drips.

FLSA Status: Exempt Original Date: July 2015 Last Revision: October 2018 JOB SUMMARY: Functions as an active member of the in-house clinical team, composed of the attending physicians, fellows, house staff and medical students, case managers, social workers, and oncology pharmacists. Coordinates all aspects of the patient?s care as it relates to chemotherapy and its safe administration. Provides a means of continuity between the patient?s outpatient and inpatient visits. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing with five years' nursing experience, one year of which should be in a related field, acute care or a specialty area required. BSN preferred. LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of North Carolina and Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or Pediatric Emergency Assessment Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS) may be required within one year in select clinical areas. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Works closely with the Nurse Case Managers and Social Workers in making referrals as directed by attending physicians to private home care agencies regarding chemotherapy administration and necessary blood draws. 2. Remains current with changes in policies or procedures, as they are written or revised. 3. Coordinates lab work, growth factors and transfusions that need to be arranged prior to the next treatment, whether it is returning to the Hematology and Oncology Clinic, by home health, or at an outside physician?s office and call/fax orders accordingly. 4. Consults with Oncology Pharmacists regarding dose adjustments, drug interactions and treatment orders, especially in relation to patients lab work if there are abnormal values. 5. Consults with the Attending Physician regarding patient toxicities and dose adjustments, and interim labs in between scheduled treatments. 6. Schedules various outpatient procedures. Coordinates necessary outpatient CT scans, MRIs, PET Scans, schedule Lumbar Punctures under fluoro when necessary for Intrathecal Chemo. 7. Responsible for scheduling and arranging follow up to the Hematology and Oncology Clinic for continuation of outpatient chemotherapy treatments initiated in the hospital. 8. Establishes local Hematology and Oncology follow up for patients referred from outlying areas when needing or requesting care coordinated closer to their hometown. 9. Utilizes assessment skills to gauge patient's physical and emotional needs. 10. Determines discharge needs of the patient and family. Communicates plan of care effectively to health care team while ensuring complete, accurate, and timely written documentation of patient information. 11. Ensures adequate staffing at all times. Directs, organizes and plans day-to-day operations of the department to ensure maximum productivity and efficiency. 12. Provides leadership to staff to ensure short and long-term goals are met by developing standards of performance and capitalizing on employee strengths. 13. Manages staff through recruitment, orientation, training on policies and procedures, and conducting 90 Day and Annual Employee Reviews. 14. Maintains a safe work environment, ensuring staff complete annual training, following polices regarding infection control and safety. 15. Ensures compliance with established personal protective equipment requirements necessary for protection against exposure to blood and other potentially infections body fluids, chemical disinfectants, radiation, asbestos and other hazardous substances. 16. Coordinates operational aspects of systems including revising workflows, forms and procedures, identifying and designing reports required for operations and monitoring implementation timeliness. 17. Conducts customer evaluations using departmental visits, surveys and questionnaires to measure quality and satisfaction of programs.
