Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Work experience in an educational setting;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (especially Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Experience with Google Suite
  • Graphic Design (i.e. Canva, Adobe Suite)
  • Preference given to individuals who have work experience with student programs.

Position Information

Reporting to the Director of the Burroughs' District 8 Student Leadership Academy, the Success Coach/ Program Coordinator will be a first responder regarding the student experience. This position will be co-managed by the Director of the Youth Jobs Program and Director of the Student Leadership Academy which both programs co-sponsored by the Office of County Council Chair Edward Burroughs III (District 8) and Joan's House, Inc.

Ability to pass a child abuse background check.

Must be available to facilitate workshops in person (location will be within Prince George's County, Maryland)

With or without assistance: ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time; ability to move freely around campus and other locations.

Ability to communicate both in person and by telephone; ability to speak clearly; mental capacity to make decisions and follow through with directions.

Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.

Ability to bend, stoop, reach and grasp as required to perform responsibilities.

Ability to perform repetitive keyboard and computer mouse functions.

Occasional evening, weekend, and overnight working hours as a chaperone or working with students in various activities will be needed.

Essential Duties

Student Development

  • Facilitate weekly skill development workshops at assigned school or designated location including virtual workshops.
  • Manage a caseload of high school students.
  • Provide monthly 1-on-1 success coaching meetings with students. Success coaching meetings provide students with an opportunity to explore their academic, social, and professional goals including but not limited to job attainment, high school involvement, and post-graduation plans.
  • Develop a strong working network with students, parents/guardians, teachers, school administrators from all high schools within the partnering schools.
  • Identify opportunities to share with students including but not limited to scholarships, jobs, internships, mentorship, enrichment programs, and more.

Perform follow-up parent/student phone calls.

Provide monthly report on student progress.

Serve as a chaperone for field trips.

Make referrals to the appropriate resources for students in need of additional services.

Collaborate with program staff to recognize students including the Student Leader of the Month Award.


Program Logistics

  • Provide direct supervision to student peer mentors.
  • Track student attendance for program workshops, field trips, and special events.
  • Serve as a point of contact with the teacher liaison for your assigned school.
  • Submit incident reports for any program infractions, conflict, or crisis situations.
  • Assist with student recruitment/selection including but not limited to attending school events, community events, and conducting student candidate interviews.
  • Assist staff in planning large-scale events and programs, including new student orientations, workshops, and annual banquets.
  • Assist with program curriculum development.
  • Assist with coordinating student field trips.
  • Assist with coordinating community service projects.
  • Work collaboratively with program assistant to ensure all materials are secured for workshops.
  • Work collaboratively with program assistant to ensure all student records are up to date.
  • Assist Director with preparation and submission of evaluations and reports, including annual satisfaction surveys, exit surveys, and Annual Performance Report

District 8 Youth Jobs Program

  • Support with the District 8 Youth Jobs program
  • Attend all Youth Jobs program special events
  • Facilitate job readiness workshops
  • Schedule ongoing check-ins with program participants regarding participation in the program
  • Meet with students individually to ensure job success and track their progress towards goals
  • Review and approve participant timesheets for timely payroll operations

Miscellaneous Duties

  • Attend staff meetings with Director and District 8 leadership regarding program needs and updates.
  • Participate in interviews for all staff positions.
  • Participate in professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Key Consideration

  • This is a one-year, contract-based position that is directly tied to the grant funding the program. Continued employment is contingent upon the renewal or availability of future funding.
