Job Duties:About This Role:Student Success Mentors (SSMs) provide first-year experience mentoring to students transitioning directly from high school to Lamar University. SSMs will engage in consistent communication with students and offer a various range of activities, including in-person seminars. SSMs will assist in planning and participating in weekly seminars with an assigned ambassador during the first half of the fall semester.
What You'll Do - Position Responsibilities:
- Engage in and contribute to Cardinal Communities and STAR Services training sessions.
- Participate in and provide contributions during spring and summer training sessions with the Cardinal Orientation Team.
- Collaborate with your assigned ambassador to co-facilitate weekly Cardinal Communities seminars during the first part of the fall term.
- Share your first-year experience with students, particularly regarding their expectations at Lamar University.
- Attend and co-facilitate up to two Cardinal Communities seminars.
- Ensure consistent availability for mentees during each work week.
- Implement the communication and connection plan developed by the Cardinal Communities staff.
- Engage in preparation and planning meetings alongside your assigned ambassador.
- Establish an accountability support system with your assigned ambassador to provide collaboration, feedback, and campus opportunities.
- Respond to emails, Blackboard messages, and any other correspondence from mentees in a timely manner.
- Complete your time and effort log for each pay period.
- Complete your timesheets in accordance with payroll procedures.
- Maintain regular communication with the coordinator.
- Undertake other relevant tasks as directed
Minimum Qualifications:- Complete a minimum of 20 credit hours, including at least 15 credit hours earned at Lamar University.
- Expect to enroll as an undergraduate student for the fall 2025 semester.
- Maintain good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.
- Maintain good judicial standing with no disciplinary action taken.
- Exhibit qualities of reliability, responsibility, confidence, flexibility, and a willingness to assist others.
- Demonstrate the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with various range of stakeholders, students, parents, faculty, and staff at Lamar University.
- Exhibit a commitment to expanding your knowledge of Lamar University and a willingness to assist others in learning about university and college life.
- Demonstrate experience handling confidential information and ensuring the accurate dissemination of responses.
- Proficient in using Blackboard and Office 365.
Physical Requirements:- Must be able to stand and move around during training sessions, seminars, and meetings.
- Capability to handle materials, write, and use technology for presentations and communication.
- Capacity to participate in extended training sessions and activities, potentially lasting several hours.
- Ability to see presentations clearly and hear discussions in group settings.
- May need to lift or transport materials for training sessions or events, which could involve light to moderate lifting.
- Ability to navigate campus facilities and engage with mentees in various locations.
