General Description: This position provides comprehensive Student Success Advising services; assists students with academic planning, exploring a career, choosing a major, resolving academic difficulties, and addressing personal challenges; assists with financial planning; and provides information about the College's available support services and resources such as Financial Aid, Bursar, transfers, and how to complete special applications for selection programs.

Minimum Education/Experience: Bachelor's Degree

Minimum (1) year full-time work experience in academic advising, coaching, or counseling

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge:
Student Information Systems;

Microsoft Office Suite of programs (WORD, Excel, etc.) or similar software;

College policies, procedures, rules, and regulations;

Financial assistance programs; and

FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and related laws, rules and regulations.

Preferred Qualifications: Master's Degree with completed coursework in student development theory

Minimum (1) year full-time work experience in academic advising, coaching, or counseling at a community college.

Required Training: Quarterly compliance training as assigned by institution

Work Hours: 40 hours per week when office is open, some weekends and additional evenings required.
General hours of operation:
Monday- Thursday 8:00am - 6:00pm
Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm
Extended hours during heavy enrollment periods.

Summer Hours June and July
Monday through Thursday; 7:30am - 6:00pm

Job Duties (Position Specific): To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily. Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement): Interacts one-on-one bi-weekly with advisees; finds effective ways to assist each student keeping in mind the goal of matriculation; attends local high schools to ensure concurrent students are properly enrolled; assists students with enrolling in courses required for degree plan, change major, and/or make changes to schedule; utilizes multiple surveys and personality questionnaires to help a student find options that might fit their interests and skills; delivers effective student planning that promotes retention and degree completion; helps facilitate a successful transition to OCCC; and develops academic and social goals during each advising session.

Assists with applications for selective admissions programs including taking exams and attaching required documents; helps to evaluate transfers from other colleges to determine what credit might be applied if enrolled.

Introduces College academic resources and various study techniques to students including access to online labs and tutors; makes referrals to available resources that can help the student overcome personal challenges including counseling referrals and accommodations due to disability; works one-on-one with students to create an action plan to address any issue(s) impeding their success; and works collaboratively with all areas of the campus to increase opportunities for student achievement and to help students remove barriers they may encounter along their path to graduation.

Educates students on academic planning using the Student Planning software; identifies student-specific barriers to graduation; strategize how to help a student overcome these barriers; helps students when special adjustments in the plan need to be made; and creates measurable student-specific activities to support successful completion of their program leading to graduation.

Interviews and advises current and prospective students who are seeking information about financial assistance programs including specific eligibility criteria; as part of the initial advising appointment, introduces the student to the many financial opportunities offered such as scholarships and loans and helps outline the student's financial plan for College; assists students in completing FAFSA; informs students if they have an additional information they need to submit; and stays current with federal, state, and College financial aid regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure accuracy and compliance in delivery of services to students.

Provides information about the FACE center and non-credit courses; assists students in locating Bookstore information; and assists international students as needed.

Reviews student satisfactory academic progress; collects data about student's academic performance; evaluates and makes decisions pertaining to continued eligibility; notifies the student; and updates student's electronic record.

Contacts those students assigned by faculty as "cases," who are at risk of failing a course due to attendance or poor grades, in attempt to help remove barriers and resolve issues causing poor academic performance/attendance.

Addresses holds of all types such as owing balances, having missing documents such as transcripts, experiencing academic suspensions, etc.; helps students in completing whatever is missing in order to have the hold removed.

Contacts at risk students on a weekly basis to identify any issues they may have and resolves those issues; contacts students that are removed from courses for non-attendance to notify them; and contacts students for enrollment campaigns when deemed necessary.
