Position OverviewThe Jayhawk Media Workshop (JMW) is looking for Student Resident Assistants for the 61st JMW, scheduled for June 8-11, 2025, at the University of Kansas.
Per the State of Kansas, student employees may hold concurrent appointments not to exceed maximum appointment and hours worked levels . However, concurrent student appointments must be of matching FLSA designation (exempt/salaried or non-exempt/hourly).
Job DescriptionThe Jayhawk Media Workshop welcomes more than 100 high school students to campus for training in journalism, preparation for their next year on the publications' staffs, and an introduction to life at KU. We bring lots of Rock Chalk spirit paired with media expertise.
Student Resident Assistants will perform a variety of duties including, but not limited to:
- 60% - Supervising workshop students. Resident Assistants will be on duty overnight and stay in the residence hall (Self Hall) with the JMW students to ensure that all workshop, KU, and residence hall rules are followed and that students make their way safely to and from classes. They will also be responsible for helping students with homework.
- 20% - Helping run registration, leading campus tours, supervising high school students and helping JMW teachers with instruction.
- 20% - Participating in fun workshop activities, such as picnic dinner and games.
Required Qualifications
- Availability (mostly in the evenings) from evening of Saturday, June 7, 2025 through late afternoon Wednesday, June 11, 2025
- Must be 18 years of age or older by the time of appointment.
- Must successfully complete a criminal background check prior to beginning work.
- During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must:
- a) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or
- b) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or
- c) be enrolled in summer session or
- d) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience working with youth.
- Journalism major or minor; or experience/involvement with KU student media.
