Position OverviewThis position supports daily laboratory operations through a combination of hands-on tasks and organizational duties. The assistant is responsible for upholding cleanliness and safety standards, restocking essential materials, and helping maintain order throughout the lab space. The role occasionally involves physical activity, such as lifting items up to 50 lbs or using ladders to reach storage areas. Additional responsibilities may include assisting with supply orders, documentation, and other administrative support.

Job DescriptionThe assistant role entails maintaining laboratory safety and cleanliness, replenishing laboratory supplies, and aiding in lab organization. Occasionally, tasks may involve climbing (using ladders for higher shelves) and lifting objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Potential tasks including paperwork assistance, ordering supplies, and the chance for advancement to a managerial role. Responsibilities Breakdown:

40%-Solution and Media Preparation
  • Prepare a variety of chemical solutions and microbiological growth media according to established protocols.
40%-Glassware Sterilization and Laboratory Maintenance
  • Clean and sterilize laboratory glassware using appropriate procedures and equipment. Perform routine lab upkeep, including waste disposal, surface sanitization, and restocking of essential supplies to ensure a clean and functional lab environment.
20%- Organization and Equipment Support
  • Assist with organizing laboratory reagents and supplies for efficient access and inventory control. Support the upkeep and basic maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment as needed.
Required Qualifications
  1. Completion of basic laboratory coursework (e.g., general chemistry, microbiology, or molecular biology) as shown on application materials.
  2. Knowledge of basic laboratory safety protocols and procedures as evidence on application materials.
  3. Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain a clean, organized workspace as indicated on application materials.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Previous laboratory experience in tasks such as dishwashing, media preparation, or autoclaving as indicated on application materials
  2. Familiarity with laboratory stock management or inventory systems as indicated on application materials.
Position RequirementsDuring the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).Employment Conditions(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
