Position OverviewThe Thomas Gorton Music and Dance Library, located on the second floor of Murphy Hall (Room 240), contains more than 100,000 scores, books, sound recordings, videos, microforms and serials, making it one of the leading music collections in the Great Plains region. The library opened in June 2000 and is named for Thomas Gorton, who served as dean of the School of Fine Arts from 1950 - 1975 and KU professor of music history from 1975 until his retirement in 1977.Job DescriptionSuccessful candidates for the Public Services positions at KU's Thomas Gorton Music and Dance Library will perform a variety of library duties including the following:
  • 20% - Provide helpful and friendly assistance to library users in a variety of ways including in-person, telephone, and by email.
  • 20% - Check out and return books, periodicals, and other library materials.
  • 15% - Perform variety of collection maintenance duties including shelving and lifting.
  • 10% - Make referrals to library faculty and staff when appropriate.
  • 10% - Answer library user questions and provide general information, directional guidance, and referrals to University sources using appropriate library resources and the Internet.
  • 10% - Assist users with and maintain library equipment.
  • 10% - Work independently of supervision when necessary.
  • 5% - Other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  1. Must maintain assigned work schedule.
  2. Must commit to ongoing training in addition to work schedule.
  3. Must be able to maneuver heavy book truck (50 lbs. or more) with or without accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Educational background in music, dance, or theater as evidenced in application material.
  2. Experience working in a team environment, as demonstrated in application material.
  3. Previous work experience that required providing customer service to library users, as evidenced in application materials.
  4. Recent public service work and/or volunteer experience as evidenced in application materials.
  5. Library work experience and/or familiarity with KU Libraries as a user as evidence in application materials.
  6. Work experience that required computer and research skills with Voyager library system, database and web-searching and word processing, as evidenced in application materials.
  7. Work study eligibility.
  8. Availability to work all year including breaks.
  9. Coursework or work experience that demonstrates knowledge of the Library of Congress classification system.
Position RequirementsDuring the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).Employment Conditions(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
