Note: Teachers dually certified in TESOL, Bilingual Education or ESL, with experience in Sheltered Instruction or fluency in a language other than English, will be given preference for all Stamford Public School positions.

General Statement:
The primary role of the Department Head - School Counseling is to provide leadership for the implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program, coordinate and develop departmental activities that support college and career readiness, and to supervise school counselors in the department.

The Department Head - School Counseling reports directly to the Principal or administrative designee.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Demonstrates leadership in all aspects of the department.
  • Supervises School Counselors
  • Coordinates or serves on district curriculum committee.
  • Coordinate, monitor, and provide assistance for the implementation of the school counseling program.
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations for school counseling program development.
  • Participates in the development and articulation of the school counseling curriculum.
  • Coordinates the implementation of the school counseling curriculum.
  • Assist in the establishment of district, building, and departmental objectives and assist with the development of a plan for implementation and evaluation of these objectives.
  • Model competence in counseling content, instruction, and pedagogy.
  • Lead department in developing and executing activities that promote post-secondary college and career readiness for all students.
  • Uses and coordinates the use of school data to ensure the counseling program is meeting the academic, college/career, and social-emotional development of all students.
  • Works with district administration to ensure a successful implementation and continuous evaluation of the comprehensive school counseling program.
  • Identifies needs and assists with the implementation of staff development for counselors.
  • Coordinates the student course selection process within the department.
  • Plans and facilitates department meetings.
  • Participates in the interview process for counselors at the discretion of the principal.
  • Carries approximately a 50% student caseload.
  • Assists in preparing an annual budget for the department.
  • Maintains an inventory of department supplies and equipment.
  • Organizes department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices, curriculum, and methodologies in school counseling, aligned with current state and national standards.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with school leadership and staff to ensure a successful school counseling program.
  • Ability to exercise effective leadership in the supervision of staff.
  • Ability to organize a department in a manner that meets the needs of the student population.
  • Ability to work with district administration to ensure a successful implementation and continuous evaluation of a comprehensive school counseling program.
  • Ability to use technology to create documents, spreadsheets, presentations and communicate effectively with all stakeholders
  • Ability to use programs and websites vital to the school counseling program including, but not limited to: Naviance, PowerSchool, College Board, ACT, SAT
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written).
  • High standards of ethics, honesty, and integrity.
  • Knowledge of and/or demonstrate the ability to learn and implement Operating Systems (i.e. Windows); Office suites (i.e. Microsoft Office, Google Docs); Presentation Software (i.e. PowerPoint, Keynote); Spreadsheets (i.e. Excel, Google Spreadsheets); Communication and Collaboration tools (i.e. Skype); Accounting Software (i.e. QuickBooks); Student Information Systems (i.e. Naviance, Power School); or any other technology deemed relevant for this position.
Qualifications:
  • CT CSDE educator certification endorsed for School Counselor (068).
  • CT CSDE Department Chairperson certification in School Counseling (105). CT CSDE Intermediate Administration or Supervision certification (092) may be accepted in lieu of Department Chairperson certification.
  • A minimum of 5 years of school counseling or related experience
