Desert Regional Medical Center is a 385-bed acute-care hospital classified as a stroke receiving center and Level I Trauma Center with an innovative, patient centered and evidence-based Rehabilitation Services Department. Our compassionate team provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services, including acute care rehabilitation, joint replacement & spinal surgery, neurosurgery, ICU, Telemetry, step-down care, skilled nursing, as well as outpatient therapy, hand and lymphedema clinics.

General Duties:

The Nursing Supervisor has shift responsibility for supporting the staff of all departments in daily operational and clinical functions. Has fiscal responsibility to ensure that department budget constraints pertaining to staffing guidelines are met. Coaches, mentors, and advises staff in coordinating and facilitating services which ensure quality care, cost-effectiveness, customer satisfaction, and compliance with regulatory standards. Represents hospital administration in coordinating hospital-wide issues of concern and appropriately notifying the administrator-on-call as indicated. Maintains current knowledge of hospital-wide operations. Facilitates positive, collaborative, and cooperative relationships between hospital departments, and within the Patient Services Division. Access to all Patient Health Information for treatment.

Department Specific Duties:

  • Obtains information and interpret information in terms of the patient's needs.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development.
  • Understands the range of treatment needed as appropriate to the ages of the patients served.
  • Shift Manager: Assures excellence in the clinical practice and procedures for hospital staff
  • Serves as a coach and facilitator for interpretation clarification of nursing standards, and hospital policies and procedures for the hospital staff.
  • Promptly and fully investigates and resolves complaints of patients, visitors, staff, and physicians. Indicates action taken for each problem identified on the administrative report.
  • Advises appropriate department directors of problems with or concerns of staff, patients, families, and physicians and real-time action which was taken to resolve these concerns.
  • Makes frequent and purposeful rounds to all areas to verify that patient needs are met, and provides guidance and direction in real-time to all nursing personnel. Proactively problem solves with staff and physicians.
  • Reviews and analyzes staffing requirements according to staffing guidelines and patient acuity, and assists staff in meeting staffing standards.
  • Functions effectively as a traffic controller for the code Blue team.
  • Functions effectively in designated role in disaster and other emergent situations.
  • Responds, assumes leadership, and provides direction in rapidly changing workload and crisis situations.
  • Assists admission/bed control with admissions and transfers to facilitate optimal patient placement. Takes appropriate action to ensure accurate and timely patient census counts on a daily basis. Facilitates patient throughput to meet targeted performance outcomes
  • Regularly participates in patient care and other work of the departments to achieve efficiencies and effectiveness through role modeling, priority setting, and assessing requirements and staff performance.
  • Assigns nurses to float to areas only where they are appropriately trained and qualified or where the nurse is paired with an experienced nurse within that department. Assures that nurses floated to an area to which they are not regularly assigned hall receive a documented orientation/competency verification to that area.
  • Maintains knowledge of all nursing job performance standards and applicable competencies, and corresponding licensing regulations.
  • Monitors the departments' activities and takes appropriate action to ensure efficient and effective operation. Observes ongoing operations and analyzes performance to identify potential problems.
  • Assesses and implements staff development and cross-training as needed.
  • Supports department-specific orientation for all new employees.
  • Supports all hospital programs to include, but not limited to, risk management safety, and infection control.
  • Maintains personal current clinical competence and expertise, and of applicable regulatory requirements.2.
  • Consistently achieves staffing for applicable shift that meets benchmark staffing guidelines and patient classification acuity measure. Effectively and routinely prevents over-staffing and ensure appropriate assignment of all nursing shift employees.
  • Directly assists staff to prioritize tasks and identify alternate means of getting the job done while meeting staffing levels and maintaining quality of service.
  • Identifies, recommends, and implements cost savings through labor and supply utilization efficiencies.
  • Promotes sound staffing practices by anticipating and forecasting personnel needs with regard to fluctuations in the projected workload.
  • Takes initiative to make change, and/or advise and collaborate with department management/nursing administration as indicated to improve quality, reduce cost, and manage/reduce risk.
  • Acts as a representative of hospital and administration during assigned shift. Takes personal responsibility for the reputation and integrity of nursing administration.
  • Assumes responsibility to assist staff to understand and respect the functions and situations faced employees in other departments and which form the basis for decisions by management/administration.
  • Effectively represents and interprets mission/philosophy, objectives and goals of the hospital and patients, families, Physicians, nursing, and other allied health personnel.
  • Achieves interdepartmental cooperation and respect for management/administration decisions. Proactively contributes to harmonious and respectful relationship.
  • Supports the decisions of patient services division by presenting them to others in a positive and instructive manner. Seeks out opportunities to identify and address staff concerns regarding issues that affect them.
  • Consults with or advises the administrator on call as necessary appropriately
  • Identifies cross-disciplinary issues and solves them appropriately.
  • Maintains open lines of communication with employees, supporting free exchange of information. Is readily available to staff to hear their concerns and appropriately act on them. Maintains visibility.
  • Maintains a good working rapport with all staff, and other departments which require frequent interactions and coordination of efforts.
  • Acts as a team member within the department and within the organization.
  • Communicates self and staff concerns and problems through proper written and verbal channels
