We are seeking NMC Registered Adult Nurses to join our In Patient Unitat Selly Park.

Main duties of the job

You will be working alongside our skilled multi-disciplinaryteam to deliver the highest possible standard of person centred palliative andend of life care to our patients and their families.

Administration of drugs in line with BirminghamHospice policy and professional guidance is a fundamental part of the role.

You will be required to take charge of the ward asand when required. The role will alsoinvolve supervising Band 2 staff, student nurses and other Clinical Trainees.

This post will be predominately based at ourSelly Park site. However, there may betimes where work across both hospice sites is expected.

In return, there will be opportunityto develop professionally and learn specialist skills supported by our experiencedand passionate multidisciplinary teams including our Education team.

Job Purpose

To deliver the highest possible standard ofpalliative and end of life care to patients and their families in accordancewith the hospice values.

Main Dutiesand Responsibilities

Managerial andLeadership

- To take charge of the wardwhen required.

- To supervise Band 2, Studentnurses and other Clinical Trainees.

- To support and mentor wardcolleagues in clinical procedures.

- To facilitate and supportchange.

- To attend and participate inMDT meetings and ward rounds.

Clinical

- Toensure that care is person centred and that the holistic assessment,development and evaluation of individual nursing care plans involving patients,families, and carers is appropriate.

- To giveencouragement, support, time, reassurance, and advice to patients withpalliative care needs, their families, and carers to promote informed choice.

- To administerdrugs in accordance with Hospice policy and the Professional guidance on thesafe and secure handling of medicines (2018)

- To work as an effectivemember of the multidisciplinary team.

- Todevelop clinical expertise in palliative care and to undertake professionaldevelopment.

- To ensure the NMC Codeprofessional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives, andnursing associates (2018) is always upheld.

- To participate in researchand audit as appropriate.

- To support students inpractice and undertake practice supervisor and assessor training.

- Tocomplete clinical skills training to maintain clinical competency.

- Toparticipate in teaching and link nurse roles.

- Toengage with clinical supervision.

- Towork flexibly across all clinical areas in the hospice if required.

Communication

- Ensureeffective communication with patients and their relatives and the widermultidisciplinary team.

- To develop confidence and competence in undertakingdifficult conversations including advanced care planning and conflictresolution.

- Demonstrate high standards of both writtenand verbal communication.

Health andSafety

- Toparticipate and support in the maintenance of a safe working environment inaccordance with the requirements of health and safety legislation to ensure thedelivery of high quality, safe, patient-centred care.

- To ensure resources are usedin an efficient and cost-effective manner for the good of the patients.

Person Specification Experience
  • - Demonstrates a clear interest in palliative and end of life care
  • - Evidence of multidisciplinary working
  • - Experience of co-ordinating workload of self and others
  • - Sound knowledge and application of up-to-date evidence-based care.
  • - Evidence of continuous professional development
  • - Excellent standard of nursing care and clinical knowledge
  • - Knowledge of hospice work
  • - Knowledge of symptom control and end of life issues
Qualifications
  • - NMC Registered Adult Nurse
  • - Practice supervisor and assessor training
  • - Post registration education in palliative/end of life care or equivalent
Personal Skills and Attributes
  • - Ability to be flexible, reliable and responsible
  • - Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • - Ability to communicate across diverse groups and communities and demonstrate equality in approach.
  • - High standards of documentation
  • - Ability to work as an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team.

  • - Interest in effective assessment and psychosocial care of palliative patients with complex needs
  • - Competent in IT skills including use of databases, email, internet, and Word
