What you will be doing

The Staff AI Engineer is a key technical member responsible for designing and implementing the platform & architecture that underpins our AI and ML modeling capabilities and integration with applications and data pipelines. This person will build & scale multiple models to retail platforms that drive business impact in the retail and grocery industry.

The position will be based in Pleasanton, CA.

Main responsibilities

• Design and build AI/ML models that address core business challenges in domains of merchandising, marketing, loyalty, ecommerce, supply chain, HR, corporate finance, health, and retail media.
• Translate business problems into AI solutions, ensuring models are aligned with business objectives and measurable through key performance metrics.
• Deploy AI solutions at scale, working closely with data engineers, application teams, and business stakeholders to integrate models into production environments.
• Ensure AI models are measurable by defining an evaluation framework and continuous improvement feedback mechanisms.

The salary range is $ 144,760 - $ 188,188 annually. Starting salary will vary based on criteria such as location, experience, and qualifications. There may be flexibility for exceptional candidates. Benefits may include medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, sick pay (accrued based on hours worked), PTO/Vacation Pay (accrued based on hours worked) or Flexible Time Off, paid holidays (8-9 days annually), bereavement pay, and retirement benefits (such as 401(k) eligibility). Associates in this position are also eligible for a quarterly bonus.

What we are searching for

• Retail and/or grocery industry experience is strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with AI applications in the retail industry domain.
• Experience in consulting is a plus
• Knowledge of AI governance, responsible AI principles, and compliance in large organizations.

We believe the successful candidate has these qualifications and experience:

AI/ML Expertise

• 7+ years of experience in AI/ML engineering, data science, or a related field.
• Experience with traditional data science, deep learning, and generative AI models
• Strong understanding of AI techniques, the ability to map AI solutions to real-world business problems, and hands-on experience in building and scaling AI models
• Experience in traditional machine learning, deep learning, and generative AI is required.
• Hands-on experience with LLMs, including transformers, diffusion models, and neural networks for real-world applications.
• Experience working defining measurable model performance metrics for AI models
• Strong coding skills in Python, as well as experience with PyTorch or equivalent frameworks.
• Cloud-based AI development and deployment experience with a preference for Google Cloud (Gemini & Vertex AI), optionally Microsoft Azure/OpenAI services.
• Familiarity with MLOps best practices, model deployment, monitoring, and retraining (CI/CD)
• Experience working with large-scale datasets and scalable AI solutions in a cloud environment.

Business Acumen & Communication

• Ability to understand business challenges and translate them into AI solutions that create measurable impact.
• Strong collaboration with application development teams to ensure AI models are effectively integrated into business applications.
• Excellent communication skills, capable of working with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently while seeking direction when necessary.

Technical & Engineering Requirements

• Proficiency in Python, cloud-based ML infrastructure (Google Cloud preferred), and modern AI frameworks.
• Experience in integrating AI models into real-time and batch production pipelines.
• Strong understanding of data pipelines, ETL, and AI model lifecycle management.
• Stay up to date on advancements in AI and translate them into business applications.
• Educational background in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Math, Physics, Operations Research or related field
