The Spurs Youth Sports Coach is a part-time position responsible for facilitating year-round camps and clinics hosted by Spurs Sports Academy (SSA). Camps are typically held Monday through Friday during designated camp weeks, while clinics are primarily scheduled in the evenings or on weekends. Programming takes place across various Spurs markets, including San Antonio, Austin, South Texas, Mexico, and additional regions. This role operates on a week-by-week basis and is contingent on athlete registration and staffing needs. Experience levels may vary based on the coach tier structure, ranging from collegiate athletes to those with middle school, high school, or college coaching experience. Coaches must have experience working with youth and consistently present a professional image, as they serve as the face of our youth sports programs for both campers and their families. They are expected to take great pride in representing Spurs Sports & Entertainment with professionalism, enthusiasm, and integrity. Success in this role requires strong communication and people skills, along with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. A passion for learning, innovation, and delivering an exceptional participant experience is essential, along with a genuine commitment to fostering the growth and development of young athletes on and off the court.
What You'll Do: - Teach and instruct basketball skills aligned with the Spurs Sports Academy (SSA) curriculum, adapting coaching techniques to meet the individual needs of athletes and helping each participant build their skillset, grow their game, and improve overall gameplay and performance in competitive events.
- Support the Manager and Associate Director in the planning and execution of all youth sports programs, including camps, clinics, small group or private skills training, community outreach initiatives, and Spurs gameday experiences.
- Assist with the successful implementation of youth tournaments by supporting tasks such as on-site score collection, updating tournament brackets, and coordinating game operations (e.g., clock and scorebook staff).
- Complete timely and accurate evaluations of all player participants. Serve as a mentor by promoting Spurs Values and encouraging the development of strong character, leadership, and positive behavior both on and off the court.
- Model and maintain a high level of professionalism in appearance, communication, and coaching behavior. Represent Spurs Sports & Entertainment with excellence in all interactions with athletes, families, staff, and the public.
- Supervise and inspire athletes ages 6-18 in a safe, structured, and inclusive environment. Foster an atmosphere that encourages growth, confidence, teamwork, and a love for the game.
- Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned to support the success of SSA youth programs and events.
Who You Are: - Must be available to attend all required staff meetings during scheduled programs/events and uphold the work schedule and responsibilities you have accepted and been assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework or degree in a related field is preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of basketball fundamentals, gameplay, and officiating standards across various age groups and skill levels, with a preferred familiarity in court operations.
- Must be willing and able to travel locally across various Spurs markets, including Austin, South Texas, and Mexico.
- Strong organizational skills and flexibility to assist with all aspects of program execution, including setup, load-in and out of program host sites, check-in, customer service, coaching, and support for special appearances or events.
- Must demonstrate professionalism and maintain confidentiality while working with diverse individuals and managing sensitive situations.
- The ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment and contribute positively to overall program goals.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- Capable of lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds as needed.
- Must successfully complete reference checks and pass a background screening process.
