We are seeking a Lead Substation Engineer to join our Power & Utilities team in Rochester, NY. This is a direct hire opportunity offering a hybrid work schedule and relocation support. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership in substation physical design and experience delivering high-quality electrical design packages across complex utility projects.
About the Role:
As a Lead Substation Engineer, you will lead and support substation engineering project teams, contributing to the design and execution of high-voltage (HV) and medium-voltage (MV) substation projects. You will be responsible for:
- General arrangements for substations
- Equipment plans, elevations, and sections
- Control house layouts
- Grounding design
- Conduit and cable design
- Bill of Materials (BOM) and cable schedules
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with multi-discipline teams to develop reliable and efficient substation design packages
- Lead physical electrical design tasks such as:
- Site/equipment layouts
- Buswork design
- Grounding grids
- Lightning shielding
- Material specifications
- Perform design studies and ensure alignment with project scope, schedule, and budget
- Conduct and support site visits, project meetings, and walkdowns as needed
- Ensure compliance with applicable industry standards and company procedures, including:
- Safety
- Environmental
- Quality Assurance and Control
- Select substation equipment and develop procurement specifications
- Review both internal and external designs for code compliance and constructability
- Coordinate closely with other project team members, including drafting and project management
- Provide engineering support during construction, including site inspections and resolution of field issues
- Maintain and organize complete project documentation from design through closeout
- Mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers and technical staff
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution
- Minimum 10 years of experience in substation engineering (5+ years for intermediate roles)
- PE license preferred (required for Senior/Lead roles)
- Proficiency in AutoCAD
- Prior utility consulting or EPC project experience is a plus
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Working knowledge of:
- National Electric Code (NEC)
- National Electric Safety Code (NESC)
- IEEE standards
- Strong leadership, client service, and project coordination skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
