We are seeking a highly detail-oriented and results-driven Solar and Energy Storage System (ESS) Design Engineer with min. 5 years of experience in the renewable energy industry. This role is responsible for designing solar photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage systems (ESS) across commercial and industrial applications. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in electrical engineering principles, experience with DC-coupled and AC-coupled solutions, NEC and CEC code, and utility applications. With strong communication and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams, a high-performing individual in this role may also be considered for advancement into a managerial position.
Responsibilities:
- Conducts site walks to assess feasibility of solar and energy storage installation.
- Collects structural, electrical, and related site information for use in the design.
- Designs or coordinates development of technical design specs for photovoltaic (PV) or solar systems remaining conscious of materials, site conditions, functional or contractual requirements, design parameters, and other variables.
- Creates checklists for review or inspection of completed solar installation projects.
- Develop detailed electrical and physical designs for PV and ESS systems, including site plans, single-line diagrams (SLDs), wire/conduit schedules, grounding, and interconnection packages.
- Perform system modeling, energy yield analysis, and load studies using software tools such as PVSyst, Helioscope, NREL SAM, and HOMER.
- Design for compliance with relevant codes and standards, including NEC 690/705/706, UL 9540/1741-SA, IEEE 1547, and utility-specific interconnection requirements.
- Coordinate with internal teams (project management, development, construction) and external stakeholders (utilities, AHJs, clients) to ensure accurate and constructible designs.
- Support interconnection application processes with IOUs and municipal utilities (e.g., PG&E, SCE, SDG&E).
- Provide technical support during permitting, construction, and commissioning phases.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of design decisions and revisions.
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of design standards, templates, and workflows.
- Expert-level proficiency in AutoCAD with a demonstrated ability to lead drafting teams and develop, implement, and maintain CAD standards.

Education/ Training:
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering or related field
- Proficiency with AutoCAD (or equivalent CAD platform), PVSyst, and one-line diagram development
- Familiarity with energy storage integration (e.g., Tesla Megapack, Fluence, PCS/inverter interaction)
- Knowledge of utility interconnection processes and requirements
- Strong understanding of NEC, UL, and IEEE standards
- Excellent communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills
- EIT certification Preferred
- NABCEP certification Preferred
Experience:
- 5+ Years of experience involving engineering design of renewable energy (solar).
- 1+ Year supervising a team.
