Sr. Composite Manufacturing Engineer - Aerospace Location: Covington, GA
Position Overview: A leading aerospace company is seeking a Sr. Composite Manufacturing Engineer to develop, optimize, and implement composite manufacturing processes for advanced aerospace structures. This role involves leading composite production activities and working closely with cross-functional teams to enhance manufacturing efficiency, quality, and scalability.
Key Responsibilities: - Lead the design, development, and optimization of composite manufacturing processes for aerospace components.
- Author detailed manufacturing work instructions for composite layup, curing, trimming, assembly, and repair.
- Collaborate with Product Design, Quality, and Production teams to ensure manufacturability, structural integrity, and compliance with industry standards.
- Identify and implement process improvements using lean manufacturing principles to enhance efficiency and reduce cycle time.
- Develop and implement cost-effective production solutions, tooling strategies, and automation for composite manufacturing.
- Conduct Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA) to mitigate risks.
- Support the transition from prototype to high-volume production, ensuring scalability and repeatability.
- Oversee First Article Inspections (FAIs), composite testing, and root cause analysis for composite-related issues.
- Work with supply chain and procurement teams to source advanced composite materials and equipment.
- Ensure compliance with quality and safety standards, including Foreign Object Debris (FOD) prevention and environmental regulations.
- Develop documentation such as process control plans, technical manuals, and training materials for production staff.
Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience in composite manufacturing within the aerospace industry, particularly in large aircraft programs (e.g., Boeing 787, Airbus A350).
- Expertise in composite layup, curing, trimming, bonding, and assembly processes.
- Hands-on experience with carbon fiber, fiberglass, and resin systems.
- Strong background in lean manufacturing, design for manufacturability (DFM), and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Familiarity with FAA regulations, AS9100 certification, and aerospace composite standards.
- Experience with Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) methodologies.
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
Bonus Qualifications: - Experience with Siemens NX/Teamcenter or similar CAD and PLM systems.
- Knowledge of composite repair and rework processes.
- Experience with automation in composite manufacturing, including robotic layup and automated trimming systems.
- Understanding of Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience working under FAA Part 21 regulations or an FAA Production Certificate.
- Prior experience transitioning from low-rate to full-scale aerospace manufacturing.
- Willingness to work alternative shifts or travel as needed.
