We are seeking a SQL Database Engineer/Administrator with a demonstrated record of success in dynamic, high-impact environments to join our team. The SQL Database Engineer/Administrator will support the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Personnel & Readiness (OSD P&R) in managing and optimizing the Defense Readiness Reporting System (DRRS), a mission-critical platform used across all P&R offices. DRRS is essential for tracking personnel readiness, including training status, medical records, deployment history, and overall unit preparedness. As a SQL Database Engineer/Administrator, you will play a key role in ensuring the integrity, security, and performance of DRRS databases. Your expertise in SQL Server management, performance tuning, and data security will directly support the accuracy and accessibility of readiness data, enabling military leadership to make informed, real-time operational decisions for force readiness and mission planning.

This position will be a Hybrid role with the on-site location being the Mark Center in Alexandria, VA. Candidates are required to live within a commutable distance to the on-site location.

This position is contingent on government Stakeholder approval.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, maintain, and optimize SQL Server databases to support MDEO applications and systems
  • Perform database administration tasks such as installation, configuration, backup/recovery, and performance tuning
  • Support development teams in creating complex procedures, tables, and views for data manipulation
  • Monitor and troubleshoot database-related issues, including CPU, memory, I/O, and disk space performance concerns
  • Ensure compliance with data security measures, including encryption, access control, and HIPAA regulations
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather requirements and translate them into database solutions
  • Implement and maintain robust backup and disaster recovery plans to prevent data loss
  • Create and update database documentation, ensuring accurate tracking of design changes and security policies
  • Participate in disaster recovery drills and ensure business continuity for critical data systems
  • Stay current with emerging database technologies and contribute to performance optimization efforts
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements
  • Active DoD Secret Clearance is required, TS or above is highly preferred
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Management, or a related field
  • 2+ years of experience for Junior Level; 5+ years for Mid-Level
  • Expertise in SQL, Microsoft SQL Server, and SQL programming/scripting
  • Proficiency with Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), T-SQL, and database performance tuning techniques
  • Familiarity with SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), and SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS)
  • Experience working in Windows Server environments and understanding interface design documents
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve database-related issues
  • Knowledge of encryption, access control, and other security measures to protect sensitive medical data
  • Experience with automated backup strategies and disaster recovery planning
  • Self-reliance in learning and understanding new database technologies and methodologies
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with IT teams and stakeholders
  • Understanding of government data security regulations and best practices
  • Experience with database design, data modeling, and performance tuning
  • Knowledge of cloud-based database solutions such as AWS RDS or Azure SQL
