Job Purpose

The solid composite design engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, testing and documenting Sceye's HAPS solid composite components. Sceye's HAPS utilizes lightweight composite structures that are optimized for use in the Stratosphere and must survive use on the ground and during ascent to the Stratosphere. Sceye is a fast moving startup and a successful candidate will embrace this pace.

Job Purpose:

  • Design and develop lightweight composite structures for stratospheric applications.
  • Perform structural analysis using Classic Laminate Theory and other analytical tools.
  • Create detailed laminate build drawings and ensure manufacturability of designs.
  • Support and lead composite part testing efforts, including test planning and data analysis.
  • Collaborate with production, systems engineering, and flight operations to ensure integration of composite components.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of design iterations, analysis results, and testing outcomes.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of design methodologies and processes.

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or a related Engineering field.
  • 3+ years of experience designing lightweight composite parts.
  • Proficient in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, or equivalent).
  • Strong understanding and application of Classic Laminate Theory.
  • Experience producing detailed composite laminate build drawings.
  • Hands-on experience with composite part testing and analysis.

Nice to haves

  • Experience with RANS CFD (Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Computational Fluid Dynamics).
  • Background in composite FEA (Finite Element Analysis).
  • Programming skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB) for automation or parametric design.
  • Familiarity with parametric optimization tools and methodologies.
  • Experience in composite part fabrication or production environments.
