Description of Job About the Work Unit The Sign Shop is an in-house sign manufacturing unit which provides high quality traffic signs to all Department of Transportation field operations in compliance with both state and national standards, and to provide the public with safe and informative traveling routes. The work unit serves internal Maintenance Sections, Public Relation and Traffic units with new traffic signs. The unit processes raw material stock and retro-reflective material into highway traffic signs; orders, manufactures and prepares orders for pick-up. The sign shop is part of the small set of self-generating revenue cost centers in the Department in which the revenues should match expenditures on material, equipment and labor. About the Position The Sign Fabricator position follows established guidelines, processes and procedures to fabricate quality signs as requested by the various maintenance/ Engineering sections. This includes standard road signs as well as to fabricate signs for emergencies and special situations or projects. These positions will learn how to properly operate and maintain shop equipment and tools as well as train on how to layout and adhere sheeting/decals to fleet vehicles. Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following: + Be able to understand established procedures and how to use Sign Shop machinery and tools to manufacture Class I, Class II, and Class Ill sign panel blanks; + Route out unusual shaped signs including wood signs. Drill, countersink, and rivet panel blanks as required; + Must determine appropriate machinery and/or tooling to manufacture sign blank required on work order; safely and expeditiously; + Learn how to apply pressure sensitive reflective sheeting to sign blanks to include guide signs using layouts and drawings, while utilizing appropriate equipment and/ or tools; + Inspect quality of work for defects, misprints, and conformity to standards; + Produce finished products created from these designs and layouts as specified; + Research signs using their code and utilize sign layouts provided in the standards or through engineering drawings; + Other job duties as assigned. Work Environment + Typical work schedule is Monday - Friday, from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm + Exposure to loud noises + Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes and skin + Required to operate heavy punch presses, iron worker, 10 foot shear, automatic printing press, drills, saws, and other hand tools + Must be able to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions in English Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights Minimum Qualifications + No previous education or experience is required. + Previous experience in automotive, carpentry, HVAC, and repairing equipment is highly desirable. Substitutions Completion of non-correspondence vocational training in sheet metal work from an accredited vocational school also is desirable. Preferred Qualifications The exceptional applicant will be an experienced sheet metal worker/sign fabricator and will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following: + Demonstrated success with the duties as listed in the Description of the Job section; + Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position; + Familiarity with safely and effectively operating heavy punch presses, iron worker, 10 foot shear, digital printers and design software , drills, saws, and other hand tools; + Experience using a variety of hand power tools; + Experience performing physically demanding work assignments; + Strong positive and can do attitude; + Strong commitment to safety; + Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills; + Self starter and motivated to accomplish assigned tasks; + Ability to quickly learn with minimal direction; + Ability to adapt to changes in work assignments and environments; + Effective interpersonal skills; + Strong attention to detail and accuracy; + Strong analytic thinking and problem solving skills; + Ability to work effectively in both independent and team situations; + Knowledge and know how to use computers and the ability to quickly learn software.
