The area also offers sports arenas for baseball, softball, soccer and beautiful golf courses. There are cultural activities including various theaters and arts councils offering concerts, plays, and live entertainment, and there are many local festivals held throughout the year.

Southside Virginia Community College is dedicated to bringing current technology to its students. The objective is to insure that students are trained on the current software applications, and that our faculty be able to use the most current up to date software for purposes of presentation and testing.

Southside Virginia Community College is seeking a Server Technician. The server Technician will maintain adequate day to day computer operations to all staff, faculty, and students at all SVCC campus locations, and Governor's School; to ensure network integrity, reliability, and availability at all times; to minimize loss of computer and classroom technology operations to all end users; to strive for enhanced and improved operations; and to project a courteous and professional attitude to all persons at all times. This position offers teleworking options but is not a fully remote role. The Home campus location of Keysville, VA, or Alberta, VA, will be based on the chosen candidate's preference.

Core Responsibilities include:
  • Assist Senior Server Engineer with building new servers. Responsible for assisting with troubleshooting any problems that may arise on the academic network, assist with applying patches and/or upgrades to server(s) in the academic environment, assist in preparation, and assist with evaluating the procedural manuals
  • Assist with maintenance, configuration, troubleshooting and upgrading all server infrastructure
  • Assist with Schedule testing, updates and maintain documentation of the changes and procedures
  • Assist with Produce reports as necessary
  • Assist with Maintain PC hardening through security program best practices
  • Perform weekly Server updates
  • Provide backup support to the Help Desk technicians and network technician as needed
  • Provide escalated Tier 2 software support
  • Provide team support to the IT department when large scale projects are being completed or when staffing is low
  • Ensure all changes to servers and procedures are documented using the appropriate methods given by the Software Engineer
  • Ensure successful backup logs are being kept and that both documentation and logs are re-evaluated on a regular basis
  • Monthly reviews of inventory in SCCM, Active Directory, TeamViewer, and Intune
  • Ensure all Servers are Hardened and Remediated on a Monthly basis using Steelcloud
  • Monitor Azure/Sentinel BlueVoyant Anti-virus
  • Monitor Azure Budget quarterly
  • Schedule and maintain the patch management cycle for all endpoints
  • Monitor server events and logs to ensure security compliance
  • Oversee Plan and implement backup and DR procedure as per VCCS security guidelines
  • Produce reports as necessary
  • Responsible for maintenance, configuration, troubleshooting and upgrading all GSSV servers
  • Backup Software Engineer with Audio Visual support for all campuses. Including but not limited to TV, Smartboards, PTZ Cameras, ceiling mics, Stem Wall and other hardware. Work with other departments on scheduling setup at appropriate times for presentations
  • Responsible for keeping up with the latest server-based technologies and making suggestions to management about new technologies. Explore new technologies and go to training applicable to the technologies that will best serve the college
  • Consistently demonstrates courteous, helpful attitude to students, staff, supervisors of the Community College, and to the public at large. Encourages subordinate staff to act in a similar manner. Promptly responds to customer/co-worker needs and queries. Fosters a positive work environment for all employees and public by displaying teamwork and cooperation for supervisors, co-workers and students
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Requires a working knowledge and adequate skills in the areas of Applications/Programming, Systems Engineering, Network Analysis, IT Analysis and Equipment and Applications Specialty
  • Knowledge of major operating systems including Windows Server 2019, Windows 10, Windows 11, MAC OSX, Linux, software applications and appliances including SCCM, Vmware ESXi 7, Vsphere 7 and above, Dell PowerStore, Zoom, Jamf, GMail, Salesforce, TeamViewer, Adobe Creative Cloud, Active Directory, Group Policy Objects, Apple School Manager, Druva, Microsoft Admin Console, Microsoft Azure, Intune, and MS Endpoint Protection
  • Requires knowledge of specified servers or equivalent experience in the field
  • Requires ability to provide daily oversight of server operations and effectively and independently troubleshoot server failures
  • Requires ability to setup audio visual equipment, performing or ensuring proper installation or appropriate software and training users as appropriate
  • Requires ability to accurately document procedures and maintain operations logs
  • Requires ability to read and comprehend technical manuals, confer with others, or conduct computer diagnostics to investigate and resolve problems or to provide technical assistance and support
