About the Role

Hinge Health is seeking a highly experienced Senior Staff Engineer to join our dynamic Research and Development team. Our mission is to transform healthcare by expanding Hinge Health's platform to seamlessly integrate with the broader healthcare ecosystem. As a Senior Staff Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in building scalable service architecture, high-impact solutions that will deliver life-changing treatments to millions.
You will guide and accelerate the evolution of Hinge Health's platform initiatives through building the right architecture of the services through domain driven design. The evolutionary pressures are both operational and strategic. Operationally, Hinge Health's backend systems must continue to deliver world-class availability through scaling in a high-compliance medical business. Strategically, a rapidly-increasing number of product teams must remain empowered to use and extend the platform everyday. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of domain driven design, microservices architecture, and experience with accelerating engineering effectiveness. Additionally this role requires a proactive, can-do attitude to tackle challenges and drive projects forward with enthusiasm and determination who loves to be hands on coding.
In this role, you will glide between levels of abstraction to foster strong technical alignment, facilitate great technical decision making, and implement elegant solutions to the most complex and high-leverage technical problems. Your pragmatism, collaboration, thoughtfulness, and creative joy will shine through in every gesture, and disproportionately influence the technical culture of our team. Additionally, we are looking for someone who can effectively communicate skills with the ability to work strategically across teams and mentor others.

What You'll Accomplish
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable systems: Leverage technologies such as Kafka, Python, TypeScript, Postgres, DynamoDB, and AWS to create robust and scalable systems.
  • Architectural leadership: Lead and participate in architectural discussions, proposing innovative solutions to complex engineering challenges. Led the design and architecture of large-scale, neighborhood wide platform projects.
  • Event-driven architectures: Implement and optimize event-driven architectures using Apache Kafka.
    Backend services and APIs: Develop backend services and APIs using Python and TypeScript, ensuring clean, maintainable, and scalable code.
  • Database management: Manage and scale databases to support high-availability and large-scale data applications.
  • System observability: Ensure observability of systems using tools like Datadog, Sumo Logic, and Sentry for real-time monitoring, log management, and error tracking.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product managers, staff and senior staff engineers, and engineering leaders.
  • Mentorship: Mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
  • Advocacy for best practices: Advocate for best practices in software development, architecture, security, and system observability.
Hinge Health Hybrid Model

We believe that remote work and in-person work have their own advantages and disadvantages, and we want to be able to leverage the best of both worlds. Employees in hybrid roles are required to be in the office 3 days per week, for the full 8 hours of a typical business day. The San Francisco office has a dog-friendly workplace program.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering or related technical field
  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with a proven track record of building scalable microservices
  • 5+ years of experience in TypeScript, Nestjs, GraphQL, Node.js, relational and non-relational databases, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Redis
  • 4+ years of experience building event-driven systems
  • 4+ years of experience with AWS services (e.g., EC2, Lambda, S3, RDS) and cloud architecture
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with system design principles, microservices architecture, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience with observability tools such as Datadog (performance monitoring), Sumo Logic (log management), and Sentry (error tracking)
  • Experience with building AI Enabled platforms and AI powered development
Compensation

This position will have an annual salary, plus equity and benefits. Please note the annual salary range is a guideline, and individual total compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies, and work location. The annual salary range for this position is $209,600 - $314,400.
