About the team you'll be part of

Ofcom's Spectrum Group manages the use of wireless spectrum throughout the UK to ensure its efficient use. The group makes spectrum available for innovative services like next-generation mobile or satellite systems, while ensuring existing solutions like Wi-Fi and radio continue to operate. The role is within the Spectrum Management and Authorisation team, which designs and maintains authorisations for wireless services, understanding industry trends, and enabling wireless innovation across various sectors. The team also represents the UK internationally, influencing spectrum management policies and managing satellite filings with the ITU.

The purpose and scope of the role

This role focuses on developing space and satellite spectrum policy, providing technical input for UK developments and negotiations leading up to the 2027 ITU World Radiocommunications Conference. You will analyze spectrum use, interpret implications for UK management, and recommend policies balancing stakeholder and consumer interests. The role involves technical studies, policy engagement, and international representation, requiring creativity and system understanding.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct technical studies on satellite networks, exploring how new satellite technologies can share spectrum with existing systems, including simulations and link analyses.
  • Develop technical criteria, models, and procedures to support spectrum policy.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and deliver them at various levels, including senior audiences.
  • Translate complex technical topics for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Manage project quality assurance and governance.
  • Act as a point of contact for stakeholders internally and externally.
  • Represent Ofcom and the UK internationally, leading on WRC agenda items.

The skills, knowledge, and experience you'll need for success

  • Knowledge of wireless and satellite communication systems, including modeling, standards, radio propagation, interference, and electromagnetic compatibility.
  • Strong numerical and mathematical modeling skills, capable of analyzing datasets and identifying trends.
  • Experience in technical problem-solving and creative thinking.

Qualifications and Accreditations
